A friend's casing is ready or very near ready to pin. How exactly do you dunk a casing?

if it's first flush you probably don't need to dunk it but whatever you want to do. You need to find someway to keep it submerged under water i.e. in a bucket with some type of sterile material (saran wrap) covering the area where you will place to weight to keep it under.

Only dunk after a 1st flush, not before.

Pick & clean off the fruits.

You can have a look at it close if you tip it out on the table to see how it's "mended"

Hold it under water (preferably in a tray that has drainage holes) with a weight on top over night -- brick, heavy pot whatever. The tray has the advantage that the weight doesn't contact/compress the casing in the drink.

Trays I use with drainage holes, solid and don't flex/compress. Drainage holes allow a fast drain when lifted out of the water, also remember to empty the catch tray several hours later when in the fruiting terrarium. Puddles can cause contamination.

Can you help out a newbie by telling me what the purpose of dunking is and how come a puddle of water is dangerous after its been soaked in water. I dunno, I've jsut heard about dunkng but never found out what it means or what its for.

Dunking is a process used (often) after the 1st / 2nd / 3rd
flush, but also befor the birthing. It helps the cake (or
the casing) to get rehydrated and to give larger fruit
bodies. After dunk you can roll, place some wet vermiculite
all oevr the cake. Or make just a simple double-end casing
(verm on the bottom and on the top).
