Could Use A Book Recommendation

The title pretty well sums it up. I'm just about done with my current book, The God Delusion (so fucking good), and I'm not sure which one to jump to next.
Any good recommendations?
Here's a sample shot of my most recent reads if that helps...
Doctor Dealer Predictably Irrational The Sun Also Rises The Old Man and the Sea Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas In Cold Blood Less Than Zero Dispatches The Rider The Call of the Wild
I was MAYBE thinking my next book would be something about philosophy, which I know very little about, so it would need to be a beginners level book on the subject if that's the genre I go with.
I also like the classics. I didn't read much growing up including the books that all of us were supposed to read when we were coming up through school...ie Call Of the Wild, In Cold Blood, Hemingway, etc.
My general interests include...true crime, drugs, partying, gonzo/new journalism, cycling, dogs. But the book would not need to be limited to those subjects.
Soooooo....any suggestions?

Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Huxley, Doors of Perception is great read. Alan Watts is a great philosopher also.
Huxley was so far ahead of the times he lived. Brave New World was the only required read I ever completed in junior high.

I really enjoyed "The Dictator's Handbook". It's a pretty good rood about the current state of affairs regarding politics.

I've read a ton of philosophical novels like The Stranger, The Metamorphosis, Brave New World, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance but Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, and The Third Chimpanzee by Jared Diamond were the most influential for developing my perspective of the world.

Malcolm Gladwell has some interesting books, I have read two of his books, Outliers, and Blink, both were good reads which make you think.
Anything by Jung, I am currently reading this, which the first 30 pages have been eye opening to say the least.

I recommed "Empire of the Summer Moon" by S Gwynne. I just told CookieCrumbs about it since we was talking about injun's mad archery skills. It's about Quanah Parker and the fights of the Comanche to survive being overrun, but very compelling for a nonfiction.

Yeah, sounds like a real gut-buster. Here's a cut and paste of a portion of the review on amazon books...
Witness the utter depravity and grotesquery which is contained within the Halls of Hell and its relation to all mankind. Behold, the end of man is at hand! In no way is the author of this work responsible for nausea, insanity, or projectile vomiting. This book was commissioned by the Devil himself.

i'll excerpt a tiny bit of it, for your viewing pleasure.
"A wheelchair-bound dwarf with severe deformities is now wheeling around wildly in the middle of the empty street, making gagging sounds, eventually hitting the curb and falling over sideways, dangling there, strapped into his little motorized dwarf-throne. Thus suspended, he joins them in puking and crying and sweating, and a river of dwarf shit soon joins the rest of the foulness, running from his ass and under the chair, suspending him above a torrent of his own diarrhea.
Suddenly the homeless man stops wretching stands up with great haste- staring around with an insane look to him...."
all this after discovering the foul flavor of "mushroom" in the beef hamburgers at the local diner- while a meat-processing plant has run afoul with lacking safety-regs.
that's just an excerpt.

i pretty much excerpted the most non-surprising part of the book, so far, and it's just getting worse. the lead up is great...and yeah, there is some more blurbs, like there is some topical stuff in the beginning, that's again, funny, such as how the aforementioned factory is owned and operated...it's again, funny as shit; Mrs. Pillwaff...LOL...

Just wrapped up The Third Chimpanzee...so god damn good. Many thanks for the recommendation. It was a great transition too from the book I read right before it...The God Delusion.
Something tells me I will end up reading the third chimpanzee multiple times throughout my lifetime.
Now if I only knew which book to read next....

Sooooo much I don't even know where to begin.
In short, it's about the evolution and future of the human animal.
It discusses our world domination, advancements in language/art/culture/weapons, our propensity to kill and destroy, and our sexual habits just to name a few. Then it goes on making predictions about the future based on what history has shown us so far.
I'll take a look at The Inhertiers

I haven't read that one but I love his work.
After about a 10 yr hiatus from reading, I picked up The Sun Also Rises. Purchased it only to impress a girl because I knew she was an avid reader. The girlfriend did not last, but I've been crushing about 1 book a month ever since The Sun Also Rises and that was well over a year ago. I also enjoyed The Old Man And The Sea and I tried For Whom The Bell Tolls, but I just couldn't get into it.
I do have a pretty savage outdoor trip coming up. Maybe it would be best to think of an outdoorsy or survival story book to get me in the mood. I wish I hadn't already read Call of The Wild.
How about Deliverance?

If drugs are an interest and you like disturbing things you should read Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. That book is a grotesque look into the beat generation and heavy heroin abuse and addiction.

Vonnegut is pretty awesome.
Breakfast of Champions is another really good Vonnegut book.
I was reading Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace but I had to put it down for a bit. That book is huge and quite the read.
1984 is still one of my favorite books and I reference it pretty regularly in everyday life
Ishmael, The Story of B, and My Ishmael by Daniel Quinn are really good books. You have to read them in that order though. Definitely my number 1 recommended reads.

I used to be a huge bookworm, mostly sci fi and fantasy though. Here are 2 of my favorites that stood out over the years:
Out Of the Silent Plant trilogy, CS Lewis:
The first 2 books are pretty short but very intense and the 3rd is longer then both and gets even crazier. It is one of the most unique sci fi/ fantasy series I have read. If you are familiar with his works like Narnia you may know he tends to implement religious concepts into his fantasy works. I loved all the narnia books but the ending really annoyed me becouse of how direct of a christian metaphor he turned it all into great series but a bit ridiculous.
Anyways out of the silent planet is different. It has a strong philosophical/ scientific angle as the main character is a scholar. It does throw out some religious concepts but in a way I actually appreciated and it also mixes in a lot of mythology and other stuff that balances it out. The second book has an intense adom and eve part and the overall story is about good vs evil/ god vs satan in a sense but it feels way more spiritual/ mythical then religious and is very creative I thought.
I don't want to give much plot away but the story involves the scholar I mentioned being kidnapped and brought on a spaceship to one of the other planets in our solar system. It is a really far out trilogy about life and the good and bad sides of humanity. Really philosophical stuff, might be a bit hard to get through parts if your not into far out thinking
Just look how great the covers are:

Ring world is another great sci fi series set in the future. Halo totally ripped off the concept of ring worlds from it Classic space sci fi though.
Also I forgot something about Out Of the Silent planet that is pretty cool. The trilogy is written in a way that that implies it is a true story. This is done sort of how the Hobbit book was written. The story teller is re telling details that he slowly gathered from the main character of the books, Ransom. Throughout the trilogy they really work it out in a great way that gives the story a real feeling even though most of what happens is very illogical
Here is a better desciption from Wiki:
Quote:
In the Postscript, Lewis gives context to the story and its narration by quoting letters he, Lewis, has received from Ransom (or the person he represents). They discuss the progress made in writing this book and how different aspects of "Ransom's" adventure can be better representated. Ransom expresses frustration and dissatisfaction with this written version of his story because it can't possibly communicate the experience and awe he felt through his senses. These letters even go as far as discussing their, Ransom and Lewis's, decision to make the book fictional, as it is in reality, to better open the minds of their readers to the possibility of its truth.
-------------------- Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free
