im sure you are, but has anyone tried and tested this out? or are we telling a noob to experiment on a tub in which he first needs to learn the basics on?

yes, RR uses wax paper to create a microclimate on his subs...Sort of like a removable casing. You just crinkle it up into a ball then flatten it back out and lay over the sub...It wont sit directly on the sub but all the little wrinkles will create a microclimate perfect for pinning...lift to mist and remove when the pinset is in..

OP I'd say make sure the surface isn't completely dry and give it longer than a week or so before you start worrying and changing things, some cultures may take up to almost a month, some much sooner. A week is definitely nothing to stress.

huh thats cool, ive watched his videos, almost everytime i do anyything and never seen him reference that. i figured you would wanna just dunk the sub if it dries out to much, by the looks of the walls on that tub the rh is 0, so the sub isnt doing its own job and needs to be rehydrated. sure watering is needed sometimes, but the first flush shouldnt be this dry.

To be fair, those are some pretty old videos; might've been something he started doing after they were created.

hes talking about trays, not monos. ive seen him, (weve all)colonized stuff with foil or wrap, pf jars anyone? but a mono is a bit different no? i mean, a single piece of foil on the top is going to do nothing to keep the sub as a whole more hydrated. its pretty much needs to be dunked in my opinion.

Condensation on the walls is not always an indicator of RH. Its caused by a temperature differential between the inside of the tub and the room its sitting in.

The concept is the same regardless if it's a tray or mono...remember we weren't discussing using this method for hydrating the sub...it is to create a microclimate to induce pinning...if he wants to hydrate his sub then he needs to dunk it...

When shit gets too dry, it yellows up, and sometimes when you mist the yellow areas they bruise.
Not the best pic to show hella dry sub, but shows what I'm talking about.

How can you tell its dry? What should a good monotub substrate look like? I get really confused because people say you dont want standing water but yet you want it to be wet?
