Getting into mycology
    #23912160 - 12/10/16 04:44 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I'm new to the forums so would like to introduce myself. I'm sir Ismoke Alot, 33 years old, coming from Zagreb Croatia. I have a vast psychedelic substance consumption and little to none mushroom cultivation experience and would like to grow my own fungi.

I didn't know how to start with all of this so I ordered mycelium growkit (three of those actually - B+, Cambodian and Golden Teacher) from the Wholecelium (as they are based in Europe) to get started. They came pretty fast (1nd december) and this is how it looked like:

I've soaked them in the water for about 15 hours and than put them in their bags. I was (and still am from time to time) using heat mats.

It's day 8 now and this is how they look:

This is Golden Teacher, it is coming along nicely..

This is B+ it is also growing nicely...

However, Cambodians are late and they just started to pop out

What I want to do next is to clone them. I want to preserve all three species. Can you please propose what would be the easiest technique to do that, without the need of having a laboratory.

Thanks in front.

Yes. First find agar powder and make plates if you cant find them locally or pasty plates mini glad rounds in time use glass jars. Your also going to want to make a still air box with is just a plastic tote with two arm hole. If you can not find this bare amount locally. And have to wait for supplys cause ordering. Make sure to take lots of spore prints.

I hope those kits get you excited enough with the hobby to start doing it yourself instead. You're going to discover they're incredibly expensive and it's infinitely more rewarding (and cheap) to grow them yourself from spores.

First off, we call "choke bags" to those plastic bags kits come with. They just don't allow enough Fresh Air Exchange (FAE) for your mushrooms and this can lead to unhealthy fruits, and often to a soggy and wet substrate that can invite bacteria to get the upper hand and contaminate your grow. You don't need to understand now, just take a leap of faith and remember this; More Fresh Air Exchange equals happy shrooms and less chances of getting contams.

So to give them some air, poke a lot of little holes in the bags. Mist your kits directly (substrate and future mushrooms, DON'T MIST THE BAG, IT'S USELESS!!) until you see tiny beads of moisture on the the surface of the substrate and mushrooms, mist again when the water from the previous misting has mostly evaporated.

I would advise you against any cloning attempts because you just have to read and accumulate a lot of knowledge before trying to do that. But you should take prints from those kits, so that you can grow them yourself in the future.

I good place to start learning what you need is this.
:goodluck:

Along with what Josex said, I'd really recommend you to start with this tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15223324#15223324

It is probably the most elementary, basic tek you can do and almost guarantees success when you follow it down to the letter. I would recommend taking spore prints and making your own spore syringe from them for this tek. This is probably the hardest part.

Also, the glove box is outdated. Make a Still Air Box (SAB). https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20048771#20048771

Try taking prints https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11397552

That culture is likely already a clone or isolate so cloning further would not be as productive as starting from spore

Good luck and never bring up kits again please. This is a diy forum.

Reading complete successful grow lots is better for learning than reading through many threads because people like tump give notoriously bad advice and advocate for really dumb methods because they think it's cool or they repeat it from someone else saying it without knowing themselves

I would use the search bar (top right of the forum) and search terms like grain spawn, monotubs, isolation on agar

But first watch the series of videos here http://www.mushroomvideos.com

But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try and another to fly
You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite
The show ain't over till you pack up at night
