One move outside the public norm and you're on camera and shamed on the internet. It's horrifying how we live.

That's because we now have all this technology without ever having collectively questioned society and its ethics. Some people have, but we're in the far minority. Most people are perfectly OK with the oppressive social norms they get used to from the day they're born.

definition of dystopia: an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one.

This is an example of how people can often lose sense of the bigger picture. Life right now for almost everybody in this country is a lot better than it used to be centuries ago.

I'm pretty happy right now with my cushy life, it would have to suck waking up at 3AM every time the rooster crows so I can plant my harvest and chop some wood by axe just to be able to stay warm in the winter. Take 4 hours to scrub all my laundry by hand, have to walk 3 miles to reach the closest neighbor just to send and receives messages into the real world, have to carry heavy buckets full of water all the way from the well just to have enough bath water to ration and reuse with the rest of the family.

it is when you have no to little wealth. being poor outside of people not working at all, is really hard work. perpetually being grinded does just what it sounds, grind people down.

i totally understand and agree with both of you about modern convenience but that doesn't mean other modern stresses have not replaced the old set with in some situations equal or excessive.

While that is true, that life is not easy, especially the poor. You can't take out of consideration the fact that even life for the poor has also vastly improved over time.

It used to be that the poor during the Industrial Revolution worked 20 hours a day with no overtime, no breaks, no labor laws, making 25 cents a day. It is precisely because of the misery and exploitation of the poor in history, and because of unions, that that we now have things such as labor laws that protect you from slavery and abuse.

When in a discussion like this, i think looking back on how bad it was before is always an invalid argument; you can always go back to a shittier time and use that point with saying ´Stop whining you little bitch, in the prehistory you would´ve gotten eaten by bears´, its just not useful, and does not add anything to a viable discussion.

But this is supposed to be about how dystopian society is. Can you really say it's dystopian if it's still arguably and comparably better compared to almost every other time in society in the past?

OP says, "One move outside the public norm and you're on camera and shamed on the internet."

But that is actually much better than what used to happen. Mobs with pitchforks would tie you in the middle of the city and put you on display so people could torture you and throw shit at you, they'd even hang you or burn you to death if they were really pissed at you, or in the Roman days they sent you to the coliseum to get mauled to death by lions.

I can see the argument about dystopian society being made if somebody mentions a time in society where serious world war and atrocities are going on, or if the government is implementing policies that seriously infringe on personal rights and welfare, like eugenics. Like North Korea, absolutely dystopian society.

I'm just trying to put things in perspective.

When I ride a bus with 20 people and there are 15 cameras on there all with the capacity to broadcast to the entire world I know that I'm being watched in a way that is at least comparable to Orwell's vision.

To be fair, those cameras are there for public safety, to capture incidents of violence and what not.

Now if they installed cameras in hotel rooms and bathrooms and other locations where you are expected to retain a certain level of privacy, yeah I'd say that's extremely Orwellian.

Living in a dystopia...

Putin helped Trump into power.

The far right is rising in refugee flooded Europe.

China is raping Africa monopolizing the last resources of the world of our children.

We're doing just fine thank you.

Leave, I had to leave the UK it was insane people everywhere judging you and attempting to control you.  Don't ever make the mistake of being young and male in the UK, you'll have a CCTV cam follow you 24/7, some fat bitches and snobby rich cunts judge you for having less money or a lesser vehicle and then when you try to walk out to the country to get away from it all theres some policeman with a batoon accusing you of eyeing up houses.  I lived like this for 34 fucking years, never once biting back but boy did I want to.  No wonder kids go crazy and fuck shit up then get arrested.  Stick the bear in a cage, stick a cam on it and poke it with a stick and shout at it that it owes you money.  Welcome to the world these greedy controlling ego maniacs created for us.  You can't blame your giv though.  Your too afraid, thats what they created with this teroor shite they made up.  So you just blame each other.  Blame someone whos got less money than you.  Kick them in the face since you don't have the brains to leave or the balls to stand up.

Yep, people are generally assholes who have stupid knee-jerk reactions and strong emotions tied to a lot of things they hear about. They get caught up in their stupid annoying often inaccurate opinions of certain topics and they cant see past them. Like a cloud that forms in front of the truth.

Its always the same shit, even on a personal level. And after dealing with so many people i dont bother arguing with anyone most of the time. First off some people argue just to argue. They'll disagree with you just because. I've had certain fuck heads disagree with me somehow even though i was agreeing with them!

And as far as the internet is concerned, thats part of the reason i stay away from FB. Ive considered in the past setting up an account but its like naaah. My sister in law is always posting stupid shit because she's an unemployed housewife that doesnt drive/have a licence..which is odd as fuck nowadays. My one gramdma didn't drive either lol.

Shes always starting stuff, pissing people off, stirring up different people in the family. So theres that and then i think of all the other people who will have access to me that i dont want to talk to...

We've always lived in some form of dystopia really
every state has just been a pyramid scheme for the true oligarchy, might be that's just human nature, or maybe we can change it.

To be fair, those cameras are there for public safety, to capture incidents of violence and what not.

Now if they installed cameras in hotel rooms and bathrooms and other locations where you are expected to retain a certain level of privacy, yeah I'd say that's extremely Orwellian.

Everyone has a smart phone now, which records camera, audio AND GPS.. all of which can be triggered remotely without your knowledge.. waay better than just a camera. Google even tracks everywhere you go if you have that turned on.
And they do have 2 way TVs now, which people can hack

I have infinite free access to drugs, alcohol, sex, can go outside and shout anything that I want off the top of my head without worrying about being arrested, and I have a computer with infinite software, movies, books, games, and yet somehow I'm living in a dystopia?

Surveillance of public places is fine as long as it's an invisible hand sort of thing. If it never interferes with people's lives, and people never know about its existence, then fine, go ahead and have cameras on sidewalks and stuff. What difference would it make to anyone if it explicitly didn't interfere with their lives? And right now most cameras in public places are like this, they have a kind of invisible hand quality.

Obviously cameras in private places are an enormous violation of privacy though.

I would love this life as long as I could keep getting coffee. In fact I'm going outside to shovel the driveway in the dark because it's best to do it while the morning is still calm and undisturbed.

I don't think you guys realize (or maybe you do) that that kind of rural life is hard labor from 4 in the morning until 10pm at night usually.

You have to wake up before sunrise, feed the animals, tend to your plants or seeds (which takes a long-ass time by hand if you aren't using a tractor)...

You want to eat a chicken but you have to pluck the feathers off and butcher it in parts first, then take out all the organs to turn into some kind of sausage or pie later. You need to forage out there and chop wood to heat your food and home which would suck if there was a blizzard in the wintertime. There is no refrigeration, so all your meats you would have to pretty much salt, brine, immediately cook, or spend months turning into a jerky. And I don't even know where you would get seasonings like salt and spices, or cooking oil.

Butter was something only the wealthy could afford centuries ago. None of your pots or pans are coated with teflon which leaves a lot of burnt residue stuck to the pan, so you have to really get in there and use some strength to scrape all those bits out. Even a simple cooking task would take out 6 to 8 hours out of your day.

The laundry part would irritate me the most, because what used to be the press of a button now takes 4 hours of you manually washing and scrubbing each article of clothing by hand, and then hanging it on a string to dry. And if the weather is bad and it rains or snows, you have to do the entire load all over again.

Really, there's no time to have a hobby for anything, because everything is work. There's obviously no light or electricity, so you have to do everything you can during the daytime while the sun is still out.

If you aspire to live like that, you might consider joining an Amish commune. They live probably the closest to the old days out of anybody in the USA.

Move to northern Maine, there's a LOT of folks that still live this lifestyle. I have at times of my life and it isn't that much work if your not lazy, you plan and pace.

Your days are not 4am -10pm they are more like 4am-8pm. no electricity = no lights except candles or oil, that gets old and expensive quickly unless you have a glass door wood stove in your living room or something, then you get some glow from that. Otherwise it's pitch black an hour after sunset and not much to do in the dark so go to bed.

You don't do firewood everyday, I can hand chop a years worth of firewood in a couple weeks. Splitting stuff for kindling you do every few days but thats maybe 20 minutes.

Having a well does not mean hauling buckets of water across a few acres of land either. you put it close and put a hand pump on it fixed to hosing that leads indoors. You got a holding tank upstairs in your house for water so that you can take warmish showers whenever, and if you wanna hot bath you boil some on the stove.

Cooking isn't that bad in the winter because the stove is always hot, in the summer though when its already hot out you wanna cook outdoors as much as possible, but when it rains..... its gonna get warm in the house or build a roof over your outdoor cook area. And cast iron or enameled cookware is the way to go.

cheese and butter are handmade at home whenever you want if you have a dairy cow.

Laundry sucks but a little more soaking, and yeah hand scrubbing shit sucks but you get into a rhythm after awhile. Drying on a line is nice though, even in the winter you can hang your clothes, let em freeze, beat the ice off and do it again. after a few times bring em in to finish by the wood stove.

That's a pretty interesting life, but I do have to ask, how do you chop a year's worth of firewood in a couple weeks? Cause I remember from putting up fires in camps, that one single log might last only 10 minutes or so. It's not very energy-efficient. And I can imagine in the winter-time you're using firewood pretty much 24/7 to avoid freezing to death in your sleep or something, so I'm curious how do you make firewood last that long?

You may have been burning soft wood when camping, hard woods burn longer.
Wood stoves also have dampeners to restrict airflow, which increases the length of time the wood will burn.

I can get madrone pieces to burn 4-6 hours in my wood stove.

A good mix of hardwood and softwood.

I can hand split around 3/4 - 1 chord a day if you stick at it but your arms will kill ya. About 1/2 a chord in 3 hours per day will keep you at a good pace and get 6-7 chords done in 2 weeks which is plenty if your house is built smart and insulated well.

I got arrested for expressing political discontent on election day.. By local BACKWOODS law enforcement. I got my civil rights trampled and indefinitely detained... Until I was lucky enough to get arraigned and made $2000 bail for , 1 Count Felony Resisting Arrest, I truly did not resist the officer i simply questioned him why i couldn't be loud in public broad day, without being profane or harassing anyone he tried to cohearse me into silence and arreted me simply because he didn't like my attitude or submit to his will..

Read that?  I got arrested because i didn't do what a cop said when i wasn't even braking the fucking law in the first place...

They stole my last $80 for and old jail bill for 9 grams of weed, i did 4 years, ago..

hard to tell, but that looks way more than a cord.  one cord is 128ft3 (8'x8'x2')  those chunks are 18-22" long, offhand; the stack looks to be at least 6' tall, and 8-10' long.  the larger (longer) you buck the rounds, the harder it will be to split by hand.  14-16" is ideal for hand-splitting, even for heavy oak (live-oak) or madrone, so long as you aren't splitting wood seasoned enough to toughen, or over-seasoned verging on punk.

you make country life out to be this incredible hardship.  neighbors miles away, water acres away.  sure, some places might be like that, but many rural/country areas are not.

1) high-lifter OR solar pump

2) knowing when/how to split firewood and store/season it

3) food canning/preserving/storing, including fermenting

life don't have to be so complicated.  also, 4am to 8pm doesn't mean non-stop work, either; especially true if one enjoys the labor and its fruit.  now if you want to negate modernities and not use solar panels/batteries, or a chainsaw, or other low-impact technologies, that is fine.  personally, i'll stick with the best of both worlds

You forget that I am also referencing a time in which people did not have automobiles and the only way to get somewhere is on horse or on foot, which is no easy task of course when it's snowing or raining or the weather isn't cooperating. Living miles away isn't a big deal to us with gas and automobiles and water sources aren't needed anymore with the advent of pipes.

i'm telling you that in many rural areas, people aren't miles away.  i have five neighbors within a mile walking distance.  two of those are within shouting distance.  one was across the canyon at such an angle we could get each others' attention when needed.  there's also cellphone service in many rural (populated) areas, including 3/4G.

you're referencing what is, for the most part, a by-gone era.  people can live sustainably and close to the land without having to live like amish/menonites, which have all kinds of socio-political/hierarchical discord within their groups.  many people that live in those strict ways ARE NOT happy

No shit, that was exactly the point of my post. Did you even read my posts? The whole point was about how life is far more convenient now than it used to be centuries ago.

Quote:

Life right now for almost everybody in this country is a lot better than it used to be centuries ago.

I'm pretty happy right now with my cushy life, it would have to suck waking up at 3AM every time the rooster crows so I can plant my harvest and chop some wood by axe just to be able to stay warm in the winter. So yes, I am in fact, referring to a by-gone era. That's the point. You saying how things are different now in the country is little relevance to my post.

Take 4 hours to scrub all my laundry by hand, have to walk 3 miles to reach the closest neighbor just to send and receives messages into the real world, have to carry heavy buckets full of water all the way from the well just to have enough bath water to ration and reuse with the rest of the family.

So yes, I am in fact, referring to a by-gone era. That's the point. You saying how things are different now in the country is little relevance to my post.

i read your initial long-winded post about how country life is all hard work and no play, gloom-and-doom, cold and hungry, hot or sticky.

and i'm telling you that is false.  country life doesn't have to be like that.  and not all of that is due to high-tech gadgets, but SIMPLE innovative technologies and, most importantly, knowledge of a subject at hand

are there any other posts of yours in this thread that are relevant?

Well of course country life is different now than it was centuries ago. Even in the country today, few people butcher and slaughter their own animals and use all the organs to make sausages and meat pies out of.

Notice how everything I wrote about the country pretty much implies that I'm specifically referring to country life from centuries ago... note the following phrases I made: "Butter was something only the wealthy could afford centuries ago," "none of your pots or pans are coated with teflon which leaves a lot of burnt residue stuck to the pan," "even a simple cooking task would take 6 to 8 hours out of the day," "you have to manually hand scrub and hang dry your laundry," "there is no refrigeration so all your meats would go stale," etc...

Isn't it obvious based on those statement I'm referring to a time in society before things like refrigerators and teflon still existed? Seriously, when was the last time butter was a delicacy only reserved for rich people? I'm talking shit from the pilgrims era.

So, again, my point was that this society is not dystopian, because life today is far better than it was centuries ago. So the fact that you say "country life now is not like what it used to be centuries ago" isn't relevant to my statement, in fact it seems to validate my point exactly.

oh great back-tracking crystal,g, i will forever on end somehow know EXACTLY WHAT DAY, MONTH, YEAR, DECADE, AND CENTURY all your posts are referring to, without you having to include any relevant information.

all you said was "country life", no time-frames.  lots of people couldn't afford butter during the depression.  are you sure you weren't talking about country life, then?  seeing as how i'm supposed to intuit across thousands of years a specific point-in-time.......

sorry, but no.

and just because life is "easier" doesn't distract from how economically, politically, health-wise, and environmentally fucked everyone and everything currently is.

Its hard to say how comfortably one could have lived, but I think quality of life was mostly shit due to taxation, war, famine, drought, etc

Ancient nomads were better off than pretty much anyone before the 20th century, and I view the negatives of our modern society as outweighing petty comforts

Back to the caves with yee

Are you serious? You mean to tell me that even after I specifically stated "a time before Teflon existed, when butter was for the wealthy, and refrigeration and laundry machines didn't exist," you STILL couldn't tell even after all that, that I'm clearly not referring to a recent point in history?

Not my fault you don't have a whole lot going on upstairs.

You would think common sense would prevail.

Teflon wasn't discovered until the late 30's and marketed fully for cookware until the 1950's

do you know when the great depression was?

The 20's and 30's. And what on earth makes you think that is at any point a "recent" time in history?

Do you know what a century is? The depression was almost a century ago.

I also stated a time before laundry machines and refrigeration was a thing, marking that timepoint far earlier than the Depression.

I even SPECIFICALLY stated, more than once, that I was referring to "centuries ago."

Holy shit, dude. Maybe you should read the post next time.

the 20's/30's are a pretty recent time in history, yes.  pretty much anything post-industrial revolution is recent history, as it directly influences our current state.

It's only "recent history" if you're comparing it to ALL of history, which is billions of years.

It's not "recent" in reference to this post, where we're talking about how society has changed and improved for the better compared to previous centuries.

In case it wasn't obvious, I'm not referring to homo habilis living out in caves millions of years ago.

Do you realize 100 years is a quarter of the entire time the United States of America has been around?

So obviously, in that context, it's NOT recent. The 1980's, THAT'S recent. The 1890's, not recent, especially when considering all the technological advancements that have popped up since the last half century that has made our lives easier. WHICH IS WHAT THESE POSTS ARE ABOUT.

Please use some common sense.
