My lil ghetto mycelium incubator

Just a lil thing i thought up and it is working great! I dont run central heating so my temps fluctuate quite a bit. Now im kinda gonna have to let my lights keep warmth when im fruiting but this baby is keeping my mycelium really happy in this cold ass house... just a gallon jug with some bleach/water inside it and a fish heater all inside of a cooler. I threw several pair of thermal undies on top to insulate it since she is packed pretty full. Hope it helps someone,im fairly nubish myself, im sure I'm not the first to think this one up, but it works well...

I used one once. It was a bacteria farm and completely fucked.

how cold does it get. if its good for you then your jars should be fine. they need gas exchange. dont bury them in your dirty undies.

Likely getting far to hot in the incubator Shroomy, do you know what temp it sits at? As Mushboy said, it's likely a bacteria farm if it's staying to warm.

Sumbitch! Well i thought i was onto sonething lol! Well it is way too cold at times, i was building this house before with cash, so it is mostly done but it is pier and beam, the walls are very well insulated with spray foam insulation, but the floor is completely uninsulated, that part is waiting for work to pick back up it is literally plywood then outside temps. I run an oil heater when im in the room but it must get to the 50s. Im not sure what the cooler stays at but they most fish heaters wont allow the water to get hotter than 80 degrees maybe 85 because i dont know of any fish that thrive above 80. And the undies are clean but i can see where they would hold germies :l... I suppose i can run the heater 24-7 but i prefer otherwise if i can avoid it. I've looked for plant seeding heaters locally but it's out of season. I have an oversized oil heater but it seems to struggle even though i only run it when im here. Outside temps do not go much lower than 35, im pretty far south, but occasionally it freezes So i should can this idea huh? So far no obvious contams and i do see a lot of healthy myc, though i know better than to think im Bullet proof. I suppose i can keep running my stinkubator for now and order a seedmat meanwhile

Whats the absolute lowest temp cubensis can be grown in? With this polar vortex coming in next week I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be close to it lol

Yea its ridiculous. I built it paycheck to paycheck, back when i was making big bucks... i installed the ducting for central air and i insulated the walls with top of the line sprayfoam. But to cut my expanses back i just put ducting so when ib have the extra cash i can just drop the compressor and motor in the ac room and the "ac plumping" is already there, it just needs the motor to be hooked up. And the walls needed sheetrock of course so i insulated the walls during the build but it will cost another $2,500 to insulate the floors which i do not have either. So yea, my floor which is pier and beam is only insulated by a sheet of plywood, and there is no full time central heating to combat the cold. Leaving the oil heater on is a possibility, but i prefer not if i can avoid it. :l... yea kinda rough winters but i work killer hours and i have no ol lAdy or children, so im rarely home. so i manage by just running the heater in my room, only when im home

Without sheetrock up you can take shortcuts through your walls in your house tho lol.
Get a pellet stove and store up on them in the summer. You only have to fill up the hopper every few days and it puts off a decent amount of heat. My father has a house in pretty much the same condition as yours.

Ahh the sheetrock is up.. its 90% done now. But lol!
All i need to finish is trimboards, ac motor/compressor, floor insulation, and my porch... then im set. Im just a cheap ass and saved myself from debt and intrest lol. But ill do all of that by next winter.
Back to the subject lol: So what makes this such a bad idea, is the bacteria going to come from the confined space, (clean) undies, water/bleach from the jug or what?

The bacteria is coming from your spore syringe. With the PF tek you're just taking the gamble that your mushrooms will outrun it. Warmer temperatures, above 75 or so if I recall correctly, will slow the growth of the mycelium while speeding up bacterial growth.

I wouldnt go below 60 either but they grow fine at 55 degrees. Depends on a size of room but a 10 dallor space heater can save you

RR reported colonizing at very low temps, not sure about fruiting though. I wonder if sclerotia would grow in the 30's

I went back in February, and found he didn't have time to bother with them, so put them out in the garage. Temps outside were in the teens and twenties, and in the unheated garage, 30's to low 40's. The jars were fully colonized. I took them home and they fruited like mad. Low temps slow things down, but that's all. I keep master culture slants in the refrigerator for years. RR

Oh okay, sweet to know. My house is around 60-66 F this time of year, and I thought things were creeping along slowly. Good to know it isn't my imagination.
