Can you post your favourite filters for jars, rounds and other stuff
    #23910236 - 12/09/16 01:31 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Im reassessing my filters as im getting a shit load of failures atm.  Im going to make an all about me video series of SAB work to be analysed, study my 12psi pressure cooker and nail this shit down once and for all.

To be honest im well read on this topic but in practice im average as a grower and I want to be great.

Can you help.

I have jars with Polyfil, micropore and this one ++

Reasons and experience of why you use what u use would help.

I was getting tons of failures from my filters.

I switched to sfds from poly and now 98% of my troubles are my own fault

I used polyfil for a couple years. The only problem people have with polyfil is user error.

Sfds poly tyvek all three will work

If one of them doesn't work for you, you're doing it wrong

Obviously people have a preference usually SFDs

So these are good for LCs if you give them a good shake and they get wet?

Whatman may have some problems to provide enough GE for grain jars from what I read.

I prefer them for their consistency vs poly I too used poly for years no problems.

I like to use filter stickers. They are pretty expensive but I love them. They are good for LCs and for grain jars. If I don't have them around I use polyfill.

They are hydrophobic but I still tilt the jar that the liquid touches the silicone and not the filter material.

So what should you be trying to do/not do when using filters for jars of grains inoculated with LI?LC and LI/ LC jars

Your filter should provide enough GE to colonize the jar completely. No problem with polyfill but I have seen posts with stalled jars from people that used syringe filters.
SFDs / CFDs / polyfill / micropore tape (I don't recommend micropore tape. Tried it with success some time ago but a lot of people report a higher contam rate) / syringe filters are common filter materials. All can be used with LC if you are careful.

BTW I just updated my thread about lids. Because I use a new drill.

What kind of issues did you have?
There are different kinds of polyfill. The user AlCapone used the stuff from the pillows and had a lot of problems to stuff the monotubs/jars right. I recommended to use fish tank filter material it is much more resistant but does not feel like plastic.
As I am not from America I don't know how the American polyfill feels like... This is what I like to use:

I did not think about that because I use a magnetic stirrer.
You can shake the jar if you use a hydrophobic syringe filter.
