First time doing agar, immediate fail...
    #23909207 - 12/09/16 05:56 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

So I tried to do a no-pour tek using OPB's Reusable petri dish tek

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21907688

which is pretty much the same as any other no-pour tek except the petri dishes are made of aluminum so they can be reused. I used the following recipe:

1/2 cup water
1g of Honey
2g of Agar
3g of Potato Flakes

Mixed all together, heated on stove until just starting to boil, poured into 10 petri dishes and let solidify into a gel at the bottom. Then I wrapped them in tin foil and threw them in my pressure cooker for 15 PSI for 35 minutes.

Result, as you can see from the pictures, is that a lot of the agar seemed to boil out of the little containers (yes they were put in upright). And indeed I see a lot of it in the bottom of the pressure cooker.

The guide just says to throw them in your pressure cooker, but there is like 2 inches of water along the bottom so are they supposed to just float in there because that's what I did. Perhaps the mixture boiled and flowed out of the pre-drilled hole because of this? If this is the case, do I need to put something that floats in there and then place the dishes on top of it so they don't boil? Or perhaps my recipe for the solution wasn't good? Thank you.

look up "pastywhyte easy agar" and load your PC like that next time.

they should not float, they need to be on something solid and the boiling water shouldn't be able to touch the lids.

The only way I had any success with that was to individually seal my petris in poly tubing...ended up being a pain in the ass...I pour petris now much easier....I wrap petris(stacks of 4) in aluminum foil and oven sterilize @425°F for 90 minutes let cool and pour agar in SAB...

I had pretty good success with agar Id recommend get a pyrex media bottle to PC your agar in then pour in sab or in front of hood ive done all my agar in a sab and so do alot of people on here but pour from the bottom up and I stack mine in stacks of 3 just easier for me to grab all of them and pour bottom up rather quickly and smoothly

Also do the motion without the actual stuff in it to get a feel and are these glass or plastic petri?

My petris are pyrex....I need to get pyrex media bottle it would help with accidental spillage....splilling agar in a SAB is an upset...kinda like spilling the bong or some shit :frown:
