Should I redunk? 9 Days no pins
    #23901019 - 12/06/16 07:14 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hey ya'll!  First off, thanks to all of the pros on here.  I've been using the site for about a year and have learned a lot from you.  I credit you for all the success I've had in this hobby so far.

This is my 3rd time using the PF Tek and SGFC.  The first two times were great.  This time, everything is going good but pinning is taking longer than I've yet to see it.  9 days and almost no signs of pins.  I say almost because today I looked on the underside of one of my cakes and see a couple of pins.

I'm worried that my cakes may be drying out.  I picked up a couple of them and they were a little light and 3 of the 10 are showing a some bluing.

I've been misting and fanning 3-4 times daily.  71 degrees F. 93%-99% RF (most of the time it's 99 but i've seen it fluctuate a bit).  Hydrometer is placed on a upside down Tupperware 2-3 inches off of the perlite.

QUESTIONS:
- At what point should I consider re-dunking and are there any reasons why I would hold off?

- I've read on a few posts that people sometimes inject water, with a syringe, into the cake in a case like this.  Do any of you recommend this over re-dunking?

- I'm not sure why this batch is taking double the time to show pins, same strain same tek, same chamber.  The only difference I can think of is this time I used the short and wide half-pint jars and the last 2 times i used the tall half-pint jars.  Anyone experience this with the short ones?

Can you take a pic of your SGFC?  A properly set up SGFC should keep those cake nice and moist.  Your hygrometer inside an upside down tupperware container is not going to tell you much.

Thanks for the reply, here are some pics.  The more i analyze the situation, I don't think they are actually drying out.  I think i'm just afraid that they are due to the length of time they have been in there without much action happening.  I looked on the bottom of couple more of them today and every one i checked has pins on the bottom.  What do you think? 10 days now.  Should I take any action or just keep being patient?

btw - the hydrometer is on top of the tupperware to get it above the perlite a few inches; not inside it

Nine days is not a big deal. Wait longer.

You did not consolidate, now you must wait.
Looks good, be patient.
Toss the hygrometer, waste of space and money.

Either way.  Digital hygrometers are shit for cultivation.  Your setup looks good.  Plenty of perlite.  I am assuming you have holes on all six sides?  Do you have a humidifier in the room your SGFC is in?  It gets pretty dry this time of year depending on where you live.  I had to crank the humidifier up on my greenhouse to compensate for the frigid outdoor temps and the central heat running continuously.  RH in my grow area is 30%.  You might experience better performance from your perlite if you trim the foil pieces to the same size of your cakes, and run a humidifier in your grow area.  If you consolidated your cakes, and environmental conditions are ideal, the mushrooms will come.  Playing the waiting games sucks sometimes.

Thanks guys.  I tossed the hydrometer and placed my cakes on jar lids instead for a smaller footprint.  Also got the humidifier cranking in the room.  Came home from work to see pins poking through the verm on the tops of most of them.

I was close to messing with the whole operation and you guys helped me stay calm and let em' be.

I had consolidated for a week after the outside was 100% covered.  Maybe next time i should give them a little longer than that.

Cheers

So you were, what, 10 days from fruiting to pins in the end? That's not abnormal at all. It sounds like you got concerned mainly because it was a different outcome than you've had in your previous grows. Don't sweat it. You're doing great, and your cakes look good. Treat your cakes well and they are going to reward you with a good flush. Enjoy the fruits of your labor and patience.

Instead of mainlining water with a syringe, you can bottom water your cakes. Youll be suprised how much water your cakes will drink!
Check out the links in my signature!
It looks like you could brush up on your rollING skills as well...
Getting more verm stuck on your cakes will do you some good in the future

:whathesaid:
Look here

The plastic lids are for bottom watering, after a good pinset sets in I give them 10-15 ccs water, I use bottled water as I don't drink city water so I don't expect them to either.
Keep it up and be patient.

Yea that's exactly it.  I was looking for reasons why this was going significantly slower than my last 2 experiences.

Awesome cakes, Richard.  Both your suggestions are bomb and I will use both in the future.

Will post some pics in a few days.

Thanks guys.
