Agar from a health food store is always going to be much more expensive gram to gram than what you can find online.
This is it for me: -50 grams of agar from local health food store: 6 euros and shitty quality. -Bottle of 500 grams of agar from Ebay: 15 euros and excellent quality.
Edited, I wrote 20 grams from local health food store but I just took a look at the package and it says 50 grams

Tell me about the wasted money...I spent over $150 between jars, supplies, syringes etc and got an eighth my first grow.
2 years later, I'm using about $4 worth of supplies and getting ounces.

I can get 1kg of laboratory grade agar for £33.04, or 100g lab grade for £5.44. Also I can get 1kg pharmaceutical grade 240B gelatin for £13.99.

you know some people have thought the same thing tump is saying(i guess)
they write teks.
tump -why dont you rewrite some teks? instead of just saying it why dont you do it? i can only imagine thats why we have the awesome catalogs from sbj/frank/whoever. none of it is SUPER mind blowing advancements just rewritten from the point of view of experienced growers with lots trail and error im sure.
grab a pen and paper tump and get to work. start with a brf agar tek. im kind of clueless about them. once i tried a brf paste but it got funky.

ill be eagerly awaiting 'tump does brf agar 2.0 tek' dont forget lots of pictures to help noobs. dont make it wordy either. thanks in advance. ill give you 5 shroom rating when you post it. thanks bro(oh wait i cant)

anyone who's tried working with the brf paste knows very well why we prefer agar instead once I upgraded it was like a dream.. much easier to keep a good sterile tech if you arent spending so much energy trying to keep your wedge together and not just smear it all over the blade.
It may just be a language barrier thing since tump doesnt speak english but when he says replace teks I figure he means delete old teks/teks he doesnt like? because all the stuff he mentions there is already teks for..
Josex, 2x 500g agar bottles for 30 euros total is cheaper than 1kg for £33.. same amount of agar.

tump said: No one recommends the another teks to noobs. I live in a city of almost a million people in which i can count the number of places that carry agar anything on one hand. 2 out of 3 dont even restock. There is one wine and beer making shop which is the only place that has malt. Yes that includes health food atores, asian markets and alike. Finding agar/ malt is impossible to large amount of population. But you can go to any grocery store and pick up corn meal, corn starch or anything i listed. The main reason people use bird seed besides more inoculation points is ease of access.
So order agar then? I live 20 miles from the nearest grocery store and I still manage.
Why would we recommend inferior substitutes to new users?

I know, what I didn't realize is that I was unintentionally lying, I just forgot how much it cost me but it was more expensive than 15 euros. Still, way cheaper than buying it from a health food store...

Patience is so important in this hobby. If someone doesn't have the patience to read and filter through the outdated information, then maybe growing mushrooms just isn't for them.
Why don't you write some teks yourself if you are so inclined. Whether people decide to use them is up to them. I think people figure out what methods work best for them, and then stick to them for the most part. Its a learning process.
Besides, you could dumb things down as much as you want, and someone is still going to find a way to fuck things up.

I think the OP means it can be expensive not hard for noobs to get going, but really it's not. Yeah Light malt extract for your agar recipe isn't cheap in which case obviously start with potato flakes.
100 gram bag of agar powder at local health food store was $8, instant mash potatoes are cheap as shit and can be found anywhere including Walmart etc.
If the hobby seems too complicated given all the resources on here then maybe this isn't the hobby for the so called " noobs" which I myself would be included in that category. But seen as I'm determined to succeed and have done so due to following teks on this site and I'm by no means the smartest dude out there but am able to follow along and have minimal funds I don't see reason why anyone else out there starting out who is serious can't do the same.
No shortcuts I say.
