Contamination vs. Shitake
    #23907961 - 12/08/16 06:18 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Ive seen many contaminates fall to the mighty shitake mycelium. Im interested in further understanding the contaminates that shitake eats, why it eats them and how it manages to do so. Also, has anyone seen a contaminate that shitake falls to? Any positive feedback is helpful.

Well probably a trichoderma lookalike like penicillium or aspergillus. I've seen cubensis overtake both of those as well on Petris, but you can still always see it underneath. A huge dark blob of shit waiting for the mycelium to die.

Shiitake isn't as aggressive as some like for example reishi or oysters. Reishi especially can destroy most contaminations in its path. But let's be honest, every mushroom species that encounters a contamination doesn't do as well as it possibly could have. Contaminations always hinder performance, some just don't crap out lol

We can thank the metabolites, and the defense system/enzymes of the mushrooms for overtaking contaminations  very sexy stuff haha

However trichoderma destroys all higher fungi. Including reishi. This is just how trichoderma evolved. It is a vital decomposer, and one of the final stages of decomposition, before higher fungi.
