I'm gonna have to eat some Shiitake this morning. They cause munchies...

Just got done eating some 3782 sautéed in imported Irish butter, freshly harvested marjoram, garlic salt, and a little pepper. Did I mention that I love shiitake?

Measly first flush harvested. I did an 18 hour dunk and when I brought it out there were two clear pins and a bunch of popcorn. Gave it a few smacks, and put it back in the GH. Looks like flush 2 might turn out alright!

Quick question on Shiitake grain masters...I have my first 6 masters from a clone on agar going. They're growing really fast and I'm wondering if I should shake the jars at 30%?

I shake once, somewhere between 30-50%. and that's all. Just once.

Some grow fast, some not so fast. My 3782 is a fast grower.

Hey folks...I have a question regarding pellet heat treating/pasteurizing...
Can I use hardwood fuel pellets and do a 'cooler tek' type of thing to run some test shiitake blocks? I use cheap ass produce bags to run my Oysters and I was planning on using them to test the Shiitake...They dont take the heat well...
Would I be better off hydrating some pellets and sterilizing in jars in the PC or do you think a cooler tek would work? Seems really similar to the 'pour water in the bag tek'...Thank you...

I guess you could try Lipa's Tek, but you couldn't supplement. Also your bags would have to be able to withstand the boiling water you put in them. It really is worth it to get good bags.

My white oak logs are cut, waiting on arrival of Snowcap spawn; but I'm running out of trees to get logs from. Can i take some of the spawn and transfer directly to PC'd bagged sawdust/pellets or should I use WBS/RGS to expand before bagging? If I can use transfer directly to Sawdust, how much should I use per bag?

Really depends on how far you want your spawn to go I guess. Is it sawdust or grain spawn. I'm sure you could expand as much as you want, as long as your sterile practices are good, and you start with contam free material. I use 1/2 a quart of rye spawn for a 8-10lb bag, but I'm sure you could use less.

If your making your own spawn for this you can allow the spawn to colonize then open the bag and add pre-sterilized supplementation. When it recovers break up the spawn and make your bags. It works well for that tek. All about timing.

I use jars for spawn.
Can I get away with doing the tek in a cooler and adding the spawn once cooled down or do I need to be in front of my flow hood?
Other question is do I need to supplement if I'm using rye spawn? Thank you.

I don't get the cooler thing...Yes be sterile about it.
You don't have to but you can. You can always use more spawn.

You don't have to but you can. You can always use more spawn.
The cooler just maintains the heat treatment longer, and when things are cool it is a good container to mix up the spawn with the substrate.. I would bag after mixing and use a polyfill filter at the opening of the bag...Super bag style.
If I have to be sterile, the cooler wont work, because the flow hood I have is too small to put the cooler in front of it.
Does anybody use plastic continers instead of bags to make blocks in?
