Shiitake was the first mushroom I grew like 10 years ago. I did a sgfc and a sawdust block. pulled quit a few fruits from it.
Nice harvest!

Humble Newcomer said: Hello all, so i have my first two shiitake blocks into fruiting. 2 months to get to this point, i recently tasted my first pink oysters and am giddy at the thought of reaping the shiitake fruits back when i began this new journey.
So shiitake block 1, (standard 6cups HWFP block, non supplemented, pasteurized in bag) i slapped all sides (too hard, some cracks throughout block) put in fridge for 4 days (in bag), cut bag and rinsed, and put into GH. It's been 3 days, no pins yets. but block promptly healed up with fresh white myc in the cracks.
Shiitake block 2 i put in freezer for 24 hours, room temp 24 hours, cut this morning, slapped bare block on all sides (no breakage), put into GH.
Basically trying two popular cold shock methods i've seen, 4 day fridge or 24hr freezer.
What i've read makes me think primordia formation should occur within a week of setting to fruiting conditions.
Guess i'm worried since, besides the cold shock, i can only fruit at 76F and i have no clue what culture i have (Fungi Perfecti shiitake log dowel).
*shrug*.
Help me relax?
Where your blocks browned or popcorning before shocking?

Was that 3 blocks harvested at once? I'm smiling so big right now.

Quadman said: Nope that was just 2 blocks. You can see the blocks sitting on a 4" PVC coupler. I should have weighed them . I doubt they will do much of anything for a second flush. Will soak them in a few days.

So I have 4 unsupplemented Pine Shiitake 3782 blocks that are almost completely brown but no popcorning or pinning yet- should I go ahead and slap and cold shock to try to initiate pinning?

Not a bad plan. The Hardwood that was spawned same bag same time is starting second flush so Pine is pretty far behind at this point.

I have first pins on first shiitake block! Glad to know its doable for me.

But more importantly, the 2nd block i put in 2 days ago has a new growth. Anyone familiar with this?

Kind of wipes off, i tried to rinse off in sink to no avail. Has an odor - Kind of unpleasant (but i kinda like it), deep and earthy.
Reminds me of athletes foot lol
Anyway, i pulled from GH and am prepared to try and fruit in a humidity tent or something. I first thought to post in contamination forum, but well, *shrug*.

Congrats on your first pins!
As far as the other blocks go I'm really stumped. From the smell you are describing I'd think yeast but I've never seen that happen to a fully browned Shiitake block.

Could it be a premature pin/mushroom that got absorbed? I've had that before.

Thanks TA!
I don't think so Quad, its not a single spot that is my concern, its that white ....growth on 3 sides of the block. Remember a while back i mentioned my shiitake wbs spawn stinks? its the same exact smell.... a stinky mushroom smell.
When i got off work i went to check GH and noticed it. But it looks so innocent by itself i had to double take to be sure that, no, that wasn't there yesterday.
I smelled both blocks, the pinning block has no odor basically, the suspect block, on the solid brown side, has no odor either.
But when smelling the new white areas, there is a faint stink.
If its yeast can i put it back in the GH? I mean, i know the answer is "no" to anything since its abnormal and i can't verify what it is..

Every time i look my mind plays a trick and says, thats just uncolonized block, but no it was solid brown before, and the white stinks.
Athletes foot is a fungus right? lol.. man its like my shiitake has athletes foot, i've only had it twice in my life but one time it was so bad my whole foot had white painful cracks throughout and stunk, just like this block. haha

back to y'alls conversation, is it uncommon for shiitake blocks to reach full brown and not have pinning yet?
Or maybe a characteristic of 3782, that it pins in bag before browning. I ask because many sources of information had me expecting pins before browning as TA was asking. Also i've seen some of growers stuff fruiting off of an almost white block, but never get a conversation, Hence my trepidation earlier.
TA - if you didn't slap and introduce to fruiting now (before primordia formation), what would you do instead? Wait for pins in bag, is that typically what you do?
You too Quad, or anyone thats listening.
For my un named culture it blistered in the bag before browning at all, then browned fully, a few days after complete brown i put inside the fridge, 4 days in fridge, then about 4 days in GH to hit pins. So that's well into browning without pins.
Just want to be on same page, thanks guys.

Well this is my first true Shiitake Grow and all the hardwood in this side by side popcorned/pinned in the bag but none of the pine has. 3782 from the same grainspawn bag to both sets.

Heres some shiitake 3782 going crazy. Made in may and there were a lot of rotten mushrooms in the bag that were cleaned off after opening the bags. Put in a 55f grow room and sprayed daily with a garden hose, kept humidity up to 90-99%. 6 days later we got somw pinning going.

I've fruited old bags as well. Seems 3-4 months is optimal for pin set and fruit size. Older bags had fantastic pin sets , but smaller fruits. Just my observations.
Commercial growing would not seem feasible economically.

Yeah this was a rack that was forgotten in the back of my incubation room situation . I honestly wanted to just throw them out but glad I took the time to clean the shit off them because they look like great yielders. I usually do 8-10 weeks until fruitING but it seems like the longer you let them incubate the higher the yields, at least until 6 months. Then they just seem to rot or turn to mush.

The other thing I noticed Drake is they are 1 flush wonders. Trying to get a second flush only resulted in a few mushrooms. Solves my trouble getting that second flush.
