Snagman17 said: Im ramping up shitake blocks, but getting tired of grain prep all the time. Thinking making bags of sawdust spawn from hwfp. What would be a good spawn/sub ratio for lipas tek? I'm currently spawning about half a pound grain to 5lb hwfp.without a flow hood I'm not to keen on adding supliments right now.
Yeah I wouldn't bother without a flowhood. I've done it in an SAB but it was a PITA
Sorry, what's a PITA?
Great thread, thank you everyone for sharing your knowledge, soon i'll be having shiitake developments of my own to share.

Anyone use oyster shell for Shiitake? I'm about to run a side by side with and without on hardwood but want to know how much to use per 5lbs unsupplemented Pasteurized sawdust? I was thinking one or two tablespoons. Any thoughts?

Perhaps go with some of Ferather experiment and check pH? I would get a fine grind with oyster. Much of it is used for chicken supplement and is coarse. They utilize it as grit and calcium. Pretty sure oyster shells are basically just calcium carbonate.

I think im going to try an outdoor mono with these for max air. Only prob is its always between 75-80 degrees here. Is it way too hot? I read they cultivate them in thailand so thought id have a chance.

It depends on what you have, Shiitake have cold, warm and wide range. Here is a basic outdoor assembly, you can water when needed.

Hello all, so i have my first two shiitake blocks into fruiting. 2 months to get to this point, i recently tasted my first pink oysters and am giddy at the thought of reaping the shiitake fruits back when i began this new journey.
So shiitake block 1, (standard 6cups HWFP block, non supplemented, pasteurized in bag) i slapped all sides (too hard, some cracks throughout block) put in fridge for 4 days (in bag), cut bag and rinsed, and put into GH. It's been 3 days, no pins yets. but block promptly healed up with fresh white myc in the cracks.
Shiitake block 2 i put in freezer for 24 hours, room temp 24 hours, cut this morning, slapped bare block on all sides (no breakage), put into GH.
Basically trying two popular cold shock methods i've seen, 4 day fridge or 24hr freezer.
What i've read makes me think primordia formation should occur within a week of setting to fruiting conditions.
Guess i'm worried since, besides the cold shock, i can only fruit at 76F and i have no clue what culture i have (Fungi Perfecti shiitake log dowel).
*shrug*.
Help me relax?
