What are the differences, and what should I use?!

Also, best place to order from?

You should use synthetic disks.
Cellulose disks can get colonized by mold easier than synthetic disks. Both work but if you have the choice you should buy synthetic disks.

This is accurate. I find sterilized medical gauze hot glued over the a hole in the lid works ~80% as much as synthetic filter disks. It also works as a injection port if you are lazy.

Perfect, thanks!

I've been using easy felt. It seems to be great, but I might as well go for the real deal.

SFD over everything else. If you have access to a microscope look at each individually the best you can and you will see microspore tape,p polyfil, gauze and most of that is subpar to sfd. It might get you by decently if you never touch your jars but so do unmodified lids. I would recommend sfd over everything else. Wether you use the whole disc or cut into tiny circles it's the best route.

Very accurate answer, the cellulose disc will absorb water, making it an open air substrate.
You will also have the same issue with any paper or plant fiber type disc.

I would ask yourself, what is my current fail rate. Do I need to change my filter setup.
There are times and situations where they all can work temporarily.

For example the jars are inside a clean container.

:whathesaid:

If you are successful with micropore tape there is no reason to change your filter material. For some reason there are people that have great success with micropore tape (double or triple layered) while others have a high contam rate. There has been a lot of discussion about micropore tape. Some recommend it, some don't. As I wrote.. If you do not have problems with it... use micropore tape.

I use both often but in all honesty I know more people who hate the cellulose ones than the synthetic ones.

SFDS are the one thing FP has cheaper than other places

I actually ended up going with shroomsupply. It was around 25 bucks for 24 of the widemouth filters shipped. And they're a sponsor.

How many lids do I get per disc?
