Growing oysters
    #23902176 - 12/07/16 03:27 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys
I cloned a wild species of oyster mushroom to cardboard and i now have a nice cardboard sausage covered with mycelium, Im wandering if i can use a used plastic pasta bag as a substrate vessel.... filling it with coffee grounds from a local cafe, placing the cardboard spawn inbetween.. does this sound like im doing the right thing? Thanks

This thread will be moved to the edible section.

Anyway:
coffee grounds are "trichoderma magnets". Untreated they get contaminated very easy. Coffee grounds are used as an additive in bulk substrates to improve yields.
They should be pasteurized or sterilized and should be inoculated in a clean environment. A piece of cardboard might not be the best thing to inoculate substrate.

Why don't you use straw as a substrate?

Hey man! Ah learning something already, being so new to growing and never having grown oysters I had thought about straw and by the sounds of it that's a good option, would it be as simple as sterilising the straw in my pressure cooker, then adding to the bag with cardboard spawn in between?

In my signature there's a TEK describing how you can grow oysters in open air  As long as your spawn is clean, it will work for you
