Brugmansia cutting advice
    #23892647 - 12/04/16 01:20 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hi guys.
About a week ago I took a cutting from a well established brugmansia but have since learned some information that has me needing someone else's opinion.

My cutting firstly has more leaf growth than I have seen most people recommend in fact I left 3 fully grown leaves on it and three lesser developed ones.
I also discovered three what appear to be buds the largest of which is about 2-2½ inches long(this is due to it being taken from a plant late in flower)

I was wondering if removing the three largest leaves and the buds will stress the plant out or if it should be fine.

The cutting in question is about 9inches high and appears to be doing quite well having already developed nubbies(the start of roots). The plant doesn't appear to be struggling in the least.

The rooting medium is water and the plant is getting about 7hours medium sunlight a day.

What's your guys opinion should I remove the leaves and buds or just or just let it do its thing.
The opinion of any of you brugmansia vets would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Dark lotus.

When taking clones from most any plant, people will typically cut 2/3 from each leaf, the prevailing opinion being that this reduces water loss via evaporation but still allows the plant to photosynthesize.

As the succulent stems of Brugs are especially prone to rot, I would be very careful, to keep that water from becoming stagnant. A dark container can prevent algae. It can be aerated with a bubble rock, or at least changed, very regularly.

Thanks for the advice.
Since posting the two of the leaves and two buds began to droop.
The two buds pulled of rather easily while the third didn't so my asumtion is they were dying.
I also removed the two leaves that were drooping.
Root development has continued steadily and I'm taking care to change the water every 24-30 hours.

I'm not sure about taking this plant recreationaly though I would appreciate any medical uses as well as old herbal remedies you guys have come across(as long as that doesn't break the dosing rule).

Again not so much something I will find my self using in the near future just more of a curiosity than anything.

Also on an unusual note and I thought I was imagining it at first but highly unscientific testing has confirmed that handling the plant in particular the sap produces more vivid not quite lucid dreams that are easy to remember.

Though flower stamens have been sold, I understand that alkaloids are taken from the dried seeds.

If I wasnt lazy, I would pop its roots in a small container of cutting mix. Id take it out of the sun for a while. Indoors to some still, preferably humid, air. Keep it hydrated. later reintroduce it to the outdoors for a couple weeks keep the roots wet..foliage wet if you can be bothered...then pot onto some real potting mix.

Or maybe not do anything. It really depends if theres evidence of rot/if i can be bothered right now doing anything in particular!

I have been keeping it indoors near a partially sunny window.
I don't have any rooting mix though if I do any in future I'll use some willow sap to encourage root growth.
I will probably take 2 or 3 more now that I know how easy they are to root.

It apears this cutting will make it.
How much root formation until tranfering to soil?

How did the 10 day sleep deprivation go BTW?

I think potting mix would be great, if it has been kept in a disease and pest free corner, for about 3-5 years and allowed to decay.

imho, these fresh and sterile bark chips are as inert as fish tank gravel, when new.

I think people at differen latitudes have different ideas of the sun.

In my desert region, it might like to come outside, during the winter, when temperatures are moderate, and there is some break from deadly heat. In the summer time, it would be a houseplant.

A warm window or terrarium-like setting would be appropriate. Shelter it's tender, succulent growth from hard winds, or there will be nothing left, except the trunk, looking like a burnt match head.

Mine do better, under the shade of a tree.

I find that Brugmansias tolerate short (!), wet freezes, when surrounded by the walls of a patio, but suffer immensely from drying winds, no matter what the temps.

Damp soil is good. Water-logged soil will probably lead to rot, within 10 days.

Thanks so when it's ready to plant place in well drained rich soil?
I have cured chicken manure and will probably mix 70:30 with vermiculite unless anyone thinks chicken manure alone would be fine.

But when exactly it it ready to plant?
Should I just go for it when the roots look like the can support new growth?

Also I get what you mean about sun.
When I get plants that supposedly grow well in full sun they always do better in slight shade.
