UNOFFICIAL SF BAY AREA ACTIVES 2016/17 * 3
    #23899349 - 12/06/16 09:17 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

With the recent derailment of the official sf bay area thread, we need a reset button.  Please post photos of your SF bay area or surrounding area finds.  Let's keep this a positive space where we discuss active mushrooms.

Actually, Sirtalis, it's principally you who's been desperately trying to derail and ruin the Bay area thread.

BTW, if I'm not mistaken, aren't those old photos?

Nice finds man. we should try to keep this thread positive. How late into the year does your guys season normally run?

Ive found them through February, but it all depends on the weather.  I think end of January is when it really starts to dwindle.

Depends on the city.  Some places in the bay even get snow at higher elevations.  Usually melts within a day or two.  For the most part we don't have to worry about freezes, just a lack of rain.

Has anyone had success looking near business buildings?  I'm finding the most woodchips near apartment complexes.  Seems like the larger the apartment complex the more they care about irrigation.

Near businesses can be good because of sprinkler systems and good microclimates created by landscaping and building walls. The only problem I run into in these spots is the use of pesticides. In the pnw there is lots of habitat restoration and parks that don't use pesticides. This makes it easy to choose where you'd like to actually harvest from if that's your bag. A good way to tell if there have been pesticides applied is to look for weeds(no weeds is usually a bad sign) or contact the city to see if anything has been used in a particular park etc.

I also notice of all mushrooms that are slug free and critters have not eatn, =pesticides. All my locations in N. Cal are sprayed. With the exception of this one hillside. It's so hilly, no one can even take the time to spray it. Not economical.

Also, it's infested with slugs.
So that's my head stash.

I give the pesticides shrooms warning to every one.

No one seems to care a whole lot.

After spending last two day driving all over looking around, I just found one lone alleni in some overgrown grassy woodchips that are right across the road from where I've been staying with my mom. Go figure. Cap shaped like a shamrock to signify my change of luck. Tried to upload pic but having issues. Sez file type not recognized even though its jpeg....I'll post once I figure out the problem. Anyhow, at least I got a token consolation prize. There was one pin I left behind. I have a feeling that theres other fruitings out there in the bay in tall grass which stays moist all day. They are just real hard ro find and usually grow more dispersed, although I have found grassy fruitings in Seattle which were significant. Overgrown woodchips. In addition to difficulty finding, they are usually much more fragile and come apart often when you pick em. The only reason I spotted this one was because it was fruiting right where a pine branch had made an opening in the grass. Rooting around in the surrounding area only resulted in the one pin...

WhyDidIDoThis...question I have had for yrs is do the slugs get high as fuck? In seattle with uts greater moisture it wasnt uncommon to find patches decimated by armies if tiny slugs. For whatever reason they target the gills first, then the rest of the cap. The bigger question beyond "are the slugs high" is would the slugs get YOU high?? If the indoles are not broken down by the slug metabolism, then it would stand to reason that the little mushroom slugs would have them highly concentrated in their bodies....i never had the nerve to try it, and never knew anyone to ask. Maybe shroom slugs are the fucking holy grail of tryptamine psycadelics, just waiting for a daring psyconaut to take a taste. If one of the resident science geeks can answer this or one of the daring wackjobs wants to try it, this question has been knocking around my head for 25 yrs at least. This random thought bounced around my head for hours at a time while I wandered around staring at the ground...

Don't know.
Seeing as they aren't a mammal they may not have the proper chemistry and metabolizem to get altered states of consciousness.
Maybe the do.
Maybe those Psilocybes taste like desert to them. Whose to say.

Might try getting a buddy to eat a few slugs.

But that would be more cruel than hacking mushroom limbs off the earth.

i wonder the dry weight of psilicin though?  Maybe it's better than lemon tek.  I've always been curious if that is what it takes to get a patch to flush, or at least spread.

I was half joking when in said to report back. Eating slugs sounds nasty and now potentially dangerous. I'm sure whatever enzymes are in the slugs digestive system break down psilocybin.

Yeah and then it would be brokwn down completely I'd assume. What were you talking about when you mentioned if that was how the patches flushed/spread? Slugs spreading spores? I r confused.

Slugs DO spread spores actually. I know I have read on here before that people have tested slug shit and found viable spores in it.

Ha that's cool that there were still viable spores in the slugs shit. Make sure to grab a few slugs at your patches to throw into suitable habitat lol. We have lots of fire ants in Washington. They be spreading spores like no one's business.

I just didn't understand what hunter was asking specifically. I'm guessing the slug shit would not have any residual psilocybin or psilocin.

Squirrels are mammals and they eat the CRAP out of my mushrooms. So I just need to eat the squirrels to reap the benefits, huh? Sounds reasonable. And nasty.

It was me that brought up the slug topic. I wondered if possibly psilocin or psilocybin might concentrate in slug bodies the way certain toxins will as they move up the food chain. Muscumol, the active indole in Amanitas is not broken down by human metabolism and is preserved in urine. Consuming Amanita piss has been an intigral part of ceremonial Amanita use by Siberian reindeer herders for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. I'm not saying I think slugs are PROBABLY hallucinogenic; its merely something that has occured to me over the years of wandering around thinking random thoughts as I stare intently at passing woodchips.. Doesnt seem totally outside the realm of possibility. I figured this was the forum to share these thoughts. Someone with equipment should test them just for shits and giggles. The other prevalent critter that likes the shrooms in the PNW are tiny little maggoty things that hatch into a little gnat. Something to think about. Thats all.

Slugs arent likely to spread spores too far since I dont think the range of those slugs is super big, but who knows. They definitely target the gills first. Mushroom spores are very durable little units and can remain dormant in an environment for eons. Supposedly they are the only thing capable of actually leaving earths atmosphere and travelling thru space due to there tiny size and durability.

Great finds this year guys! Found this one early this morning near an allenii patch, so I'm about 99% sure it is in an allenii but I couldn't help but notice the nipple on the top was very pronounced

Found some cyans in grass.  Also some new allenii.  Thinking of giving these a few days before harvesting.  Maybe right before the next storm.

I would take those, they will probably start to dry out a little. I doubt they will get bigger before Thursday

You should read this and include the information below when you make a new request for an ID.

II. Accurate mushroom descriptions

It is important to describe your mushrooms as accurately as possible.

Along with the pictures you should try to provide the following:

    * Habitat What kind of trees were nearby?  What was it growing from?
    * Location Where in the world was it?
    * Gills What do they look like?  Always try to take photos that show the gills of both young and mature mushrooms.
    * Stem Carefully dig it out of the ground so you can get a picture of the whole thing.
    * Spore print color (if you have time)
    * Scent of the mushroom.
    * Color that the mushroom bruises when damaged.
    * Anything else you might find important

I'm considering letting some of the patches keep growing through the storm.  They're heavily shaded and protected by bushes.  I've pulled some fatties from here, just need to be patient and let them grow.

I think you should leave them. More dry weight man. 75% or greater humidity is like a rain for the shrooms.

Sirtalis - the photos of the ones in the grass look amazing.  It is always a pleasant surprise to see them in the grass.  Nice job!

Every one of my patches is fruiting right now.  If you're in the bay, I'd highly suggest everyone check on their patches or scout for some new ones.  It's primetime.

Environmental conditions. Likely the cap was growing pinched underneath a branch.

Found yesterday in Emeryville.  I had checked this habitat before and found nothing but tubaria and stropharia.  Then while making a phone call I spotted these:

Any tips on where to look (generally and specifically) in the Bay Area? I went to Golden Gate Park around chain of lakes and the esquitarian field all the way up to the windmill. Found blewits but not actives. Any other hotspots in the Bay Area or tips on what to look for? Any neighborhoods, streets or parks to look around?

It's against the rules to ask for specific locations. Just look in wood chip mulch beds around parks, businesses, colleges and government buildings.

So confusing, at two of my patches someone ripped up a few mushrooms and left?  One patch was about half harvested unfortunately.  Mycelium ravaged.  The other was left with only 2 or 3 mushrooms overturned.  Makes me think it was someone picking up the mushrooms and not knowing what they were.  Bummer.

Notice the overturned mushrooms on the left side??
