DustBunny said: OP said he preferred short boards to cruisers because of their control. I replied that cruisers are short boards, just usually wider (~9"), huge wheels (56-65mm). Some have very comfortable shapes yet are close enough to popsicles (regular modern skateboard shape) to be able to do some/all of the same tricks (left on the pic in my last post). Others, like the board on the right, just for fun.
Yeah I misspoke, was my bad there. But glad you posted the pics so I know what I'm talking bout between the two of em. Or going to get one, cause I'm sure you get a little more control on a shortboard.

Many of the shapes that closely resemble popsicles stick to your feet way better (than a popsicle), and offer a more comfortable pop. As big as most are, a 9.5" shovel (second down from the top left) always offers more control than an 8" popsicle. Response, how fast one can flip the board around, is not the same. Further, the right smaller (say also 8") cruiser should be superior to a popsicle in that way, too. Different tweaks to the shape can enhance or diminish any desired aspect. A sharper tail for more scoop and pressure, a flatter tail for better turning and stable pop. The current (popsicle) shape was designed specifically for the advent of tech skating, and flip trick variety. Specifically for overall less control, which comes with greater trick/tech potential. A tre crook for example is a bit easier on a 7.5" pop than a 9.5" shovel. By current I mean from around 2000-2010. Boards have obviously gotten quite a bit bigger the past several years for the first time in a couple decades, and the current craze for different shapes continues growing bigger than ever.

I'm not the best by any means either man. But just sticking with it and persistence you can start landing tricks pretty regularly. I only picked it up this year after not doing it for like 6 or 7 years but I can still ollie well and land kickflips, just trying to learn more shit again.
