"The Dude and The Zen Master" is a great GREAT read, it's just a 3 day conversational dialogue between Jeff Bridges and Bernie Glassman. Can learn a lot about life and spirituality from it honestly.

The Last Kingdom series by Bernard Cornwell. He has written 10 books in the series and he's not done with it yet. It's about the Danish invasion of Britain and the formation of the country England. Fucking awesome read.

The thing is with book recommendation is that you'll get 5 years worth of reading material thrown at you with everybody saying that their book is the best and should be read first. Essentially pointless.
What are you in the mood to read? You created the thread, it's your book club. Choose the subject, I'll give you a book recommendation accordingly.

Good idea!
I'm currently reading David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, and it's pretty good but you really would have to enjoy Dickens to get into it.
However, for recommendations, I solidly recommend Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky. That was a life changing read, it almost brings tears to the eyes just remembering it.

Currently reading some R.A. Salvatore book about his Drizzt character. Good series of books for anyone who likes to fuck around reading AD&D based fantasy novels.

Im currently reading The Ancient One by T.A. Barron.
Its one of the trippiests books ive ever read. im half way thru a little more.
But theres a hidden meaning about "The Ancient One" that i cannot figure out and the recent edible/lsd trip i had today sent me thru a loop trying to decode the hidden meaning of this whole book.
I swear, this book is life changing...

That's a good series. I read the whole thing like 5-6ish years ago. It's such a long series but I read the whole thing consecutively from first to last. I don't do that anymore because I like to make series of books last longer.

Shelby Foote's Civil War is supposed to be really good, i wanna get the three-set hardcover, cause it's supposed to be a a classic.
also
The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln And American Slavery by Eric Foner
and A Stillness at Appomattox by Bruce Catton
on Vietnam, i wanna get Embers Of War: The Fall of an Empire and the Making of America's Vietnam by Fredrik Logevall
all of these come recommended if you like History. no, i ain't read them yet, but i plan on it.

I think i mentioned The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan in another thread, but i'll mention it here as well. It is a super interesting way of looking at plant/human relationships.
How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu was a surprising good little book. It was short, hilarious, and it managed to touch me right in the feels in ways i didn't expect.

Quote:
Overview[edit] The book centres on the lives of three individuals — the physicist (and serial killer) Michael Kearney, on the verge of a breakthrough in theoretical physics sometime in 1999; Seria Mau Genlicher, the cybernetically-altered female pilot of a "K-ship", and the ex-space pilot and adventurer Ed Chianese. Seria Mau and Ed's stories take place in the year 2400 AD.
The lives of these three individuals are linked in many ways, though most tangibly by the presence of a mysterious creature called The Shrander, who appears in many guises to all three characters throughout the novel (with anagrammatic names of Sandra Shen and Dr. Haends). They are also linked by the Kefahuchi Tract, a space-time anomaly described as "a singularity without an event horizon", an object of awe and wonder that has been the ruin of many civilisations attempting to decode its mysteries.
The Shrander takes many forms, most often with the body of an old woman in a maroon wool coat, with a horse's skull for a head which may be similar to its original form. Harrison appears to have taken his inspiration for this strange entity from the legend of the Mari Lwyd, a creature with a horse's skull for a head, bedecked in ribbons, that features in the ancient folklore of Gwent and Glamorgan.
Elements of Light originally surfaced in Harrison's short fiction, particularly the stories "The Horse of Iron and How We Can Know It" and "The Incalling". The former contains prototypes of the Shrander and Kearney characters, whilst the latter deals with the Sprakes, a clan of dubious urban magicians. Both stories are available in the collected volume of Harrison's short fiction, Things That Never Happen.
okay, this sounds dope as fuck. interdimensional space demon type shit. aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Y'all need to hit up the "What book are you currently reading?" thread. It's got 10 years worth of book recommendations by members of the Shroomery.
It can always use more people, and I for one have read several books after hearing about them there. I just finished Dune after like everybody there recommended it, and I couldn't be more glad that I did.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6013837/fpart/1/vc/1
I keep mentioning this thread when the topic comes up but I'm not sure how many people actually come and post because of it.

lots of good ones, lately I'm in the mood to recommend the Name of the Wind for fantasy, also Earthsea of course. For general fiction House of Leaves is damn good, and can't go wrong with Kurt Vonnegut. Non-fiction I've recommended Enlightenment 2.0 to a lot of people, its a great book (about the value of logic, the mistakes made in the era of rationalism and the anti-logic anti-intellect movement in media and public discourse lately.

I second the can't go wrong with Kurt Vonnegut. I got my sister to read him recently and she liked it, but my mom has had Sirens for months now without even picking it up.
Since this is a recommendations thread, the book I read before Dune was a classic - Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. It's dark humour as well, but written in a much different way than Vonnegut. It was just amazing. Definitely up there with the best that I've read.

Everyone drop what you are currently reading and read Loren Eiseley. If you don't, I will come to your house and kick your ass Jay and Silent Bob style.

That was an interesting book, I was always fascinated by the part where Strassman talks about the patient that had visions of being raped by crocodiles, that would be such a heavy visual to have. I guess it was related to the patient being raped when they were younger, or something like that, I could totally be wrong though.
