How I just made my SAB (too ghetto for a coffe can, soldering iron or drill xD) 1

So I've been on hiatus for half a year or more now due to a busy lifestyle . Finally getting around to growing, and wouldn't you know it, both my old SABs are in use by my gf and her cats xD. One is now a kitty litter box, and the other is holding all our internet cords so that the cats can't stop playing around with. Pretty convenient the arm hole is the same height as the cord in the wall , but inconvenient I need it for sterile work..
Now that I'm going to be growing for a bit though, I need a SAB for myself. The nearest store for me to get anything is half an hour away. The city is an hour away and I'm snowed in (Canadian winters...) I wanted the SAB made quickly because I made agar literally just before this without thinking about my SAB situation, so I had to make it out of household materials I had at the time. I'm sure anyone can find these materials and make a SAB no probs.
Things you will need: -100+qt tub -torch (an essential for flaming tools after this is complete ) -screw driver/idfk.. something to melt holes big enough for some strong scissors to fit through -strong scissors (not some fuckin dinky schoolyard scissors)
How to do it, with pics:
First and foremost, before you have a still air box, you need to have a still air room. This box NEEDS to be in a room with STILL AIR, this means no vents running, and doors need to be shut.
My first SAB had 6" holes made out of coffee cans heated on the stove. I found 6" holes to be too small for my liking (the bigger the holes the better, to reduce piston effect and arm chafing ), so I made this SAB have 8" holes. I tried looking for a coffee can with an 8" diameter to no avail.. So I had to look for other options...
For starters, luckily I have a bunch of unmodified 110qt tubs, so I traced out 8" holes for myself:

I heated up my screwdriver..

and punched a hole while it was fuckin cold out:
Make sure you punch on the top of the hole ( towards the bottom of the tub) because when the tub is upside down, this part will be much more jagged. You want to have the bottom and sides of the arm holes smoother for your delicate arms
I continued trying to use this screw driver for the entire 8" hole, but got way too cold for that shit. I was like,"there has to be a better way." Luckily I made a hole big enough for some scissors to fit through, all I needed to do was weaken the plastic by heating it up with a torch:
If the plastic starts to catch on fire, you've heated it too much, if it is still really hard to cut, you've not heated it enough
Doing this, the scissors cut this shit like it was paper..

Literally 30 seconds - 1 minute later..

Finished product:

Now I get to do some agar tonight
I wish I had a soldering iron like muda, 8" drill bit, or a larger coffee can, but this was fuckin so easy I'll definitely do it again if I was in a pinch, and wanted to share this with y'all because of it.. There's no reason why anyone shouldn't have a SAB! All you need is a flame, scissors and a screwdriver!

I was looking for my old monotubs the other day and then realized where I have been pulling my winter clothing out of Wives and GF's man!

Lol! So true. Yeah monotubs are great for clothes xD. They keep the stale air out. If anyone ever asks why I have tubs with holes I just say for clothes and nobody ever asks twice

nice in detail tek! Love the pics and vid, good job.
highly covered topic it seems.
I used a soldering iron and it did take forever. seems like your way would be faster and a lot less smoke and melted plastic mess.
8" is nice and big.
My current setup has squares instead of holes that are from corner to corner 8" and I get paranoid sometimes.
Do you think squares would cause any problem as compared to circles?
And how big can you go on holes without making too much air movement from outside the box?

Forgive me for asking but why did you tape the circles back into the place? Do you just keep them like than and just push your hands in when you want to use it?

I literally just changed that part xD, you can see the pics of how it opens. That was me letting my agar cool down in a sealed chamber, so they don't draw anything in via vacuum as they cool.
@tom if you have a decently still room and a deep enough chamber, you don't even need arm holes. Just a 5 sided box. Really no such thing as too big

So a glove box is really just unnecessary then?

I bet. I've used them before I know I could have made it work so many ways to skin a cat haha. I literally am stuck at home tho and needed a SAB within 30 minutes because I'm still pretty busy. This was the best I could do considering my circumstances. Pretty much no fumes, took 30 seconds in the warmth of my own home, and something I'd hope most people would have.
I just did my first agar inocs in it. Fuckin love the bigger holes <3 so much room!!
@ego a glove box is actually worse. Bigger surface area when arms move around, stirring air. Also has a huge piston effect because it's just attached to the arm holes when you move your arms in and out. Unless you can have a completely sealed box void of contaminations(impossible) a glove box is inferior.

I have been wondering about the piston effect; I never could understand why people would go through the trouble of making a glove box because of that. You just cleared that up for me.
Might as well make a flow hood if you are going to go through all that trouble.

Thanks dude. I was actually so shocked how easy it was to cut a thick pp5 tub with scissors. Felt like extra thick cardboard paper really.
Haha definitely should enlarge them holes. These are so amazing. I love how much room I have. I'll for sure report back after doing a bunch of transfers in this new box. Going to do some of your LI for the first time soon as well

Nah man. SAB is no trouble at all to make ^
Flow hoods aren't necessarily cheap.

I was talking about a glove box. Its still much less work than a flow hood though.
Flow hoods aren't cheap. It would be fun to design and build one though, and that's enough of a reason for me to do it! I am a steel fabricator by trade, so I don't really thinks its that intimidating of a project.
