Laying spawn Horizontally

Has anyone else had experience with this? I have seen a lot of the larger spawn producing companies using this method to save shelving space. I have a ton of harvest crates laying around that I'd like to try this with. Anything to save space in the incubation room. Anyone else seen this method used?

When I see that done it's usually in mycosacks or any spawn bag that has the filters running all along the bags.

It's one of those things you can do or not do, up to you. I see no harm in doing either way, having done them both myself over the years.

I think you're right, Marty. I'm switching all of my spawn production over to saco2 bags soon. Feel like I'm wasting so much space (as far as spawn is concerned) with unicorn bags.

Word. Thanks for the voice of experience, tmethyl.

I have never been able to pull the trigger on those bags, I have been tempted to though as well, mainly out of space like you.

I incubate large spawn bags on their sides if I over fill them with grain. It actually kinda takes up more space but the thinner layer of spawn as opposed to a think/dense sack of grain helps keep core temps in check. I prefer them on there sides for that reason alone, the way I look at it is the more spawn you can fit per bag the better for my input costs at the end of the day. Bag costs add up fast.

My thoughts exactly. What bags are you using and how many lbs grain per bag?

I've been in the same boat. They are quite a bit more expensive but I feel like you can damn near fit 3x the amount in them, which is definitely worth the money to me.
