if your talking about a terrarium for fruiting that sounds fine except you have no provisions for lighting.

if you're actualy talikng about an incubator then you have it all wrong,an incubator only needs a steady temp it does not need humidity or air exchange.

please specify exactly what you are trying to do,as it sounds like you have two different things mixed up.

your much better off with a seperate unit for each rather than trying to do both in the same container,at this stage you dont need humidity,if you seal the heater inside the jar using silicone sealant you'll stop the water evaporating and soaking everything with condensation (excess humidity could encourage contams during the colonisation phase).you'd also need to cut a hole in the lid of the cooler and cover it with plexiglass to allow light to enter during fruiting.

i'd suggest doing a serch for "tub in a tub" incubators and the "poor mans pod. having a seperate unit for each will allow you much more flexability and produce better results.

check them as little as possible, once a week is fine.
remove the foil lids and flip the jars over when they are 50% done to prevent stalling.

if you seal that heater inside a plastic soda bottle using silicone sealant you'll solve all your condensation problems.it shouldn't matter if the jars are close to the heater just leave a thermometer next to the heater to make sure temps are not to high.

you should realy consider buying two rubbermaids and using the heater you already have to make a "tub in a tub".

use cable ties or somthing similar to stop the top rubbermaid from floating then add as much water as you can, fill to within an inch or two of the top.then just put as many jars in as you like.
you'll get much more even heating and no condensation problems.
sorry it took so long to reply.

edit... add a small submersible pump when you can, this will give even better results.

Use enough water to float the top tub. More important is to use spacers or clamps or something to prevent the heater from touching either tub and melting a hole in it.Good luck!! BTW,I'm using a small heating pad, set on low and wrapped in a couple layers of cotton towels. On top of this sits a 10 Gal. tank with a couple inches of DRY magazines on the bottom to absorb, regulate, and dissapate the heat.Trial & error showed me that 1 1/4 inches of mag = 80F constant temp.My 1/2 pint jars sit on top of this, covered with 2 dark towels to keep heat in & keep light out. Everything is turning white & fuzzy- I can't wait!

wrong.you dont want the top tub to float, you want it to be surrounded by water.this gives the most uniform heating possible.and common sense dictates that you wouldn't let the heater touch the tubs.

here are some pics.

keep everything covered with some towels/blankets to keep light out and heat in.
