Depends on what your ultimate goal/profession is.

personally, going to college was one of the best choices I've ever made.

The idea that college is for everyone is a path pushed upon millions of school kids every year, leaving many debt ridden with useless degrees. Our educators should be ashamed

Kudos to you for actully examining the issue to determine your best career path.

My advice is look at what careers are in growing fields and which ones you would be interested in, don't go "just to go"

***good luck

Worth it if it's a field that requires a degree (engeneering etc). But any major that don't really contribute to a field, don't go. Learn it online. If you go and major in philosophy, I wish you the best of luck to get out of debt

I'm going next year into alternative health care. I'll be 24 then. Just make sure you go for what you really want to do and can make a living in.

depends on a lot of factors, I tend to value intellect higher than all other faculties so personally I value universities highly and think a society without them is trash. I think everyone should be educated in history, basic science and math as well as having a grasp of philosophy and general information, so ideally everyone would go to university or at least read up on the information coming out of universities, without necessarily needing to pay to go to classes.

That said, in our current model there are unfortunately a lot of people who are better off not going to university, especially in america. Certain schools are just total jokes, unfortunately, and even within good schools certain departments are total jokes, and even within good departments some professors are total jokes.

If your concern is purely career driven, and about what will make you money then many areas of university are not for you, because they are NOT job training programs. I don't think that is even a problem, as long as people recognize that and refrain from such programs if they lack the funds, intellect, time or interest. Examples of such departments would be Gender Studies, most Fine Arts departments, a lot of the social sciences etc. That doesn't mean these departments don't have value (some of them are questionable I admit, especially the cultishness of gender studies) but they are definitely not career moves for most people. That's not even a bad thing imo, but maybe I'm just not as money obsessed as your average american, or Canadian for that matter.

If you want to work in any science: you need unviersity. If you want to be an engineer, an architect, a designer, a doctor, a vet, a cop(in Canada), a geologist or all sorts of other technical but knowledge-based jobs, you need university. If you want to work in the arts (a tough go unless you're either particularly clever or a con-man) then you need university. If you want to work in government, in a lot of businesses, in education etc, you need university.

If however what you want is a reliable transferable skill that you can make money off of quickly for minimum expenditure of time and resources, then obviously trades are where you want to go, and for that you don't need university (unless you wanna be an electrician or something).

Pretty straightforward imo

I dropped out of community college twice.  Had no patience for it and found the teaching lack luster due to most students being dumb.

I think you are better working in your field to learn it.

I dropped out of sixth form aged 18. Then didn't go back to college until I was 25. Studied for a year to get the adult access equivalent of A levels then went to uni aged 26 and did an undergrad degree. Then I did a master's degree. Now I've just started a PhD (another 3 years). The MA and PhD is fully funded, but I am in debt for the undergrad. I don't care about the debt though because you only have to pay a very small amount back out of your wages and only then when you start earning. Don't know what it's like where you live, but for me it is 100% worth it. Being a student is awesome. You get to work when you want and study something you are passionate about. What's not to love? I never want to leave education and see myself in the university researching for the rest of my days.

P.S. It should never be about the end goal re getting a job. It should just be about doing something that you love.

In the last like 15 years or so America has gotten really aggressive about collecting on student loans and tuiton has skyrocketed. It's really hard not to be practical. I'm not saying it's easy in Britain. I have no idea.

That's understandable...Tuition fees have sky rocketed here too, but I've never really felt that bothered about it because I think it's worth the cost if they let you pay it back in small amounts once you're earning a decent salary. Education is the gateway to a higher salary, so it's likely you're going to be able to pay it off, otherwise it would be illogical to go in the first place for many - although that's not why I went...I went because I'm a social outcast, don't like taking orders/society at large and am passionate about learning lol.

If they're hounding people for the money though that sucks. This reminds me...I need to tell the student loans company I'm still a student. Have some letters myself.

Obsolete in the modern era as a foundation of knowledge. Seems needless especially if it will leave you in massive debt. Teaching oneself is essential these days in my opinion, though applying the knowledge is another matter and sometimes requires patience lol.

It depends what your major is.  Community college transferring into a 4 year state school is the way go.  My undergrad was $1700/semester.

Take the training necessary for your work.

As a musician Ive taken private lessons from a few tutors over the years, I abhor the institutionalization of this field, even tutoring is mostly done inadequately and for the wrong reasons (an hour once a week for $50 is a disgraceful manner to operate). Training is necessary though and I have more lessons to come.

Anyways, decide what you want to do and figure out what kind of training / certification will be required.
Take a couple of years figuring out what you want to do if necessary, youll be in that field for decades.

whatever you wish to pursue unless you don't have the technological means available. For me i have made money from music and computer programming... both learned for free on the internet. Knowledge just for the sake of knowledge is never a bad idea anyways.
