choking the chicken
    #23896586 - 12/05/16 11:36 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

i'm sitting here at the airport eating a nice chicken sangwich I brought with me, when I discover a bone in one of the mouthfuls that I possibly could have choked on while eating hastily (from being extremely hungry and on a time constraint).  Then I started thinking how horrible it would be if that happened in public, since I would probably panic and start attempting to give myself the Heimlich maneuver on a nearby chair, which would add humiliation to the ordeal since everybody would be thinking a crazy person was trying to hump a chair.

So has anyone ever had anything like this happen, where you had to give yourself the Heimlich or get it from someone?

Once when I was kid me n my friend were eating quarters. Next thing I know he's chocking. My mom came out and held him by his ankles shaking him. Next thing I know I'm chocking on a quarter being dangled by my ankle

Nope, but in about 3rd or 4th grade we had just learned the Heimlich a couple days before from a guest speaker who came to teach us the importance of knowing the Heimlich when S.H. (I won't give his full name) started choking at lunch.  C.W. immediately jumped up and said "ooh, ooooh, Heimlich!" in an excited voice as if he was finally getting to try out some cool karate move he learned a few days ago.  C.W. gave S.H. about 3-4 thrusts and S.H. heaved the bite of food about 5 feet through the air.  We all had a great laugh even though the situation was very serious.

Did you know the Heimlich was invented by Nazis as an interrogation method?

I got the wind knocked out of me by my bike's handle bars once when I was younger.

I started panicking and going up to each of my friends, grabbing my chest with one hand and motioning to the bike with the other.

They were pretty confused.

Dude, you chocking on a chicken bone bought from the store is the best thing that could happen to you.

You could sue the shit out of the company

I eat a shitton of food including peanut butter, which sticks to your mouth quite a bit.  Interestingly, everytime I've ever choked on food or accidentally swallowed an oversize bite, I have always been able to breath through my nasal passageways until I got the food down.  I'm not sure exactly why other people aren't able to do that.

When choking on something that doesn't dissolve or melt in the throat (for instance a bone or a quarter), it can remain stuck even after using rational, logical methods such as breathing through the nose.  You are correct when referring to standard foods however.

I had an old co-worker that would bring in lunches from home, and he also liked to fish a lot. Well one day he had brought in one of his lunches and it happened to be a fish sandwich from a fish he had caught.

He started eating it hastily (didn't see it happen, only heard some reports from people around him) and there ended up being a bone in the thing still. The bone got lodged into his throat and he had to go to the hospital immediately to get it removed because he couldnt see it or remove it himself.

Pretty fucked up situation to be in I can imagine. Total sympathy for the guy; it's probably towards the bottom on the "Shit that can go wrong" list.

so they would feed the prisoners chicken with hidden bones and interrogate them once they started choking?  this sounds worse than waterboarding

Never Heimliched, but once when I was a kid I was sitting on the floor eating Jolly Ranchers and watching T.V.  Suddenly my throat started to close up and I found it impossible to breathe; just the tiniest hiss of air could be forced through, and then nothing, despite me heaving my lungs in vain...
I fell onto my back as the world started to go black, and I felt sure I was going to die.  A few seconds later my throat opened enough for another small trickle of air which kept me from passing out and, eventually, it finally cleared.

I've never again eaten Jolly Ranchers; the thought of which still fills me with dread.

Favorite entheogen experiences in descending order:
1)Combo of oral DMT + smoked Bufotenine
2)Amanita (urine drank twice)
3)Mushrooms > Achuma 16"+cid(still need higher dose Achuma)> Cid (still need high dose)
4)Morning Glory-HBWR (+cumin, cinnamon aldehyde adducts) > Methyl chavicol (need more activators)
5)Salvia (need to try quid)

All readable matter in the above post is ficticious... any similarities to real life are purely coincidental.

Blessing.

that sounds like what happens sometimes when someone gets bit by a rattlesnake, or has an allergic reaction to a bee sting and ends up having to get one of those emergency tracheotomy deals (where you jam a sharp obect into the adam's apple area to create an air passage).  Good thing you didn't have to get that done...stay away from those jolly ranchers!

The Nazis also invented wet willies, they were brutal when it came to interrogation.

People choke on regular food too though, and require the Heimlich...and I've never swallowed something like a bone or a quarter, but I imagine if I did I would probably still be able to breathe through my nose - at least until I got medical attention to remove the object from my throat.  Either way I'm sure there's some reason for it, and maybe I'll require the Heimlich one day.

You're right.  After I wrote that I thought about it and was like "no, actually there are cases where I'm wrong" but I couldn't think of a way to properly edit it so I just let it be.  But you are correct.  I guess I was thinking specifically peanut butter, but there are plenty of foods that would require the heimlich.  Good call

Thanks   Still don't understand why people can't breathe through their nose though, but I guess that's because it hasn't happened to me.
