First Grow Log (Lots of pictures!)
    #2382984 - 02/27/04 11:37 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Hi all,

This friend of a friend of a friend is growing shrooms and he sent me his procedure and pictures to post on this board for some feedback.

He made 12 cakes of verm/brf using the PF Tek, but he wasn't too sure about what to use for the lids since lots of teks said different things, so he made:

3 - metal lids w/ holes, aluminum foil on top
3 - metal lids w/ holes, no foil on top
3 - aluminum foil w/ holes, aluminum foil on top
3 - aluminum foil w/ holes, no foil on top

he left the jars in a dark drawer for a few days and they all germinated 4 days after innoculation.

the ones w/ aluminum foil w/ holes and no foil on top colonized the fastest by far, followed by the metal lids w/ holes, no foil, then alumimum foil w/ holes, aluminum foil on top, and the metal lids w/ holes with aluminum foil on top were the last to colonize.

the first jar was fully colonized after 19 days, most of the others colonized at around 30 days, and the last jar still has not fully colonized (the shape of the cake got a little messed up because there was an air gap between the verm and jar at the bottom).

after colonization, the jars were introduced to light and the mycelium was allowed to grow a little stronger before birthing (for 3-5 days)

the terrarium setup is a rubbermaid tub w/ perlite for humidification, and the cakes were set on 2 wire mesh tables

Then the cakes began to show signs of pinning:

5 days after birthing, 2 of the cakes began to fruit!

One day later:

The next day:

Today, it was noticed that was one one of the cakes, some of the shrooms were growing straight down into the perlite, so to prevent the cake from becoming waterlogged, they were plucked and munched on:

The next day:

Any comments or feedback? How is my friend of a friend doing on his first grow, and what should he try for his second? He wants to try some kind of casing or grow them in trays with something... maybe WBS?

What about a mixture of perllite and vermiculite for a bottom layer...it might help with that downward growth affect...

Or what about dying the perlite a darker color? Like putting some dark blue food coloring in there? Has anybody ever tried that? It seems like it would work...

And also, I have another question... on that cake that has the biggest shrooms... is it going to grow any new shrooms before the first flush is done? Or are the shrooms that are there pretty much going to be it (as far as the first flush goes)? And then, on the second flush, will the shrooms grow from the same spots or from new areas?

Thanks for the comments, and I'll keep my post updated w/ new pictures every couple days

New pics:

My biggest shroom's veil seems to be breaking... my friends should pick them when the majority of the flush looks like this, right? And pick the whole flush at once, correct?

Also, could somebody please answer the question I asked in the previous post?

Thanks a lot,
Goomashroom

your friend did great on his first grow. i wouldn't have plucked and munched the poins just as they were bulking up, after all that wait. food colouring should be sterile... and it'd look funky.... but it's not necessary.

when the big one is ripe, pick it. unless they have aborted, the little ones may grow more. they will most likely come from different spots, as there may be a small divot where the fruit twisted off.

:thumbup:nice job

First off
killer first grow i hope you'll keep posting pics
you can pick each cake at the same time, you do not need to pick them all at the same time
for instance, if you have one cake ready to be picked, then go for it, even if the other cakes are just pinning
for yr next grow
i say do wbs and make some casings
or if you feel more comfortable, use brf cakes in yr casings.
my foaf has had good success w brf cakes in casings

My friend got the wire mesh from Home Depot... i think it was called like "wire cloth" or something... it's 1/4 inch, too. He tries to keep the terrarium between 70 and 75 degrees fahrenheit, and he does it by turning on the light when it gets too low and turning it off if it gets too hot... so as he's regulating the temperature, they're also getting a few hours of light a day.

Here's some more pictures from today:

My friend has some questions regarding when he should pick the flush... the first question is... should aborts be picked when they stop growing so they don't rot? and my second question is... on the last picture in this post... it was taken earlier this morning, and my friend is starting to think that he should pick the cake pretty soon... maybe tomorrow... does it look ready to be picked? or does it need another day or two?

Thanks for the feedback,
Goomashroom

Nice grow man and nice pics!

Whan the alleged aborts start to darken and haven't grown, pic 'em. And harvest the fruits from that last pic. They are ready!

That's a remarkably anal setup...very nice.
