Any faecal officionado's out there today?
    #23894878 - 12/04/16 07:02 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hello fellow Shroomerites :hi:

I will start by saying that it has been a while, nearly 2 years, since I grew shrooms :mushroom2:
A bit of background on my experience and basic tek: I have had success fruiting brf cakes, using ryegrain spawn to "Damo's 50/50" horsepoo/coir in monotubs to grow cubes and have also successfully grown Atl 7 sclerotia in ryegrain which I also managed to fruit straight from grain thanks to Stonesun's "Comprehensive stone growing guide" (unfortunately no spawn to bulk has been successfull for me and Atl 7 yet).
I generally use multispore into "baby bottle lc's" then onto ryegrain spawn in a glovebox. I usually do a few lc's of each type I wish to grow and select the most vigorous :yesnod:
This is all to say that I knew home mushroom growing well enough to get by with the resources at my disposal.
I now find myself with plenty of time and space on my hands and am currently contemplating attempting another cubensis monotub grow :strokebeard:
My dilemma is that I now live in the middle of a cattle station (thats what we call a ranch here in Australia) and have access to heaps of grass fed cow poo but limited access to horse poo.
There are still plenty of horses in my area but no one stables them so manure collecting would involve much walking across fields and paddocks looking for "horse apples" and may be more time and effort than it's worth....
I remember trying to use store bought cow poo for bulk subs before and (just like everyone says) it turns to slop and you have a hard time getting that nice fluffy substrate that holds the "field capacity" moisture content so well while still remaining airy and light.
The fresh stuff I can collect at the moment is not as fibrous as horse poo but it still has a higher fibre content than store bought stuff and since we are just coming into summer here the cows will get put onto dry fodder and their turds should become more solid :poop:

So the purpose of my ample preamble is to ask if anyone has had experience or, better yet, success using fresh cow manure and if so, did they treat it differently to horse poo?

Thanking you all in advance :hatsoff:

If you use verm or straw or coir to buff up the cpoo it works well enough. Field aged not fresh.

Yes, I should have said field dried... by fresh I mean unprocessed. I collected a few barrow loads today in various stages of drying and was going to leave it all to dry so I have a consistent medium to work with. And yes I do build up my substrate using coir as per the 50/50 tek I referred to...... I find the cow manure I've used previously would be fine during mixing but would be mush after pasteurisation
So my original question still remains unanswered: Who has used it in monotub substrate and how did they treat it differently?

Mix it with straw verm coir. I wouldn't use more than 30% cpoo in any substrate.

Cheers
So even with horsepoo I would use 50% coir, 30% poo, 15% verm and 5% coffee grounds with a dash of gypsum for flavour. Im thinking that the cowpoo will have to be around 15% with an increase in coir to maintain structure/texture. How low can the manure content be to still have benefit?
And by straw are we talking chaff or ryegrass hay or what? Dry or green? I have access to green silage hay as well as dry hay from last season. My lawn is also ryegrass/fescue/clover/phalaris just like the pasture land around me that they harvest as hay; would lawn clippings work?

Listen a diverse substrate is nice, it usually results in a nice robust colony. But the "benefits" IMO are greatly exaggerated. Water content is more important and materials like coir and verm hold far more water. If you are using manure to save money on materials then cool use it up. But if your aim is to "increase yield" or "better potency" then you are better off not bothering. The nutes are supplied by the grain for the most part, the role of bulk is to supply the water.

Also never use hay in a bulk sub unless you like mold.

!!this is freakin perfect!!

stable hpoo has cedar chips and shit from horse bedding. no good.

take the time. walk around and gather your hpoo nuggets. i did this all the time.
sometimes ole' farmer john will talk to you while you stroll around getting poop.

a bin this size takes about 45min to gather. its worth it!

pasty is right tho(duh)
I have noticed little difference in bulk done with coco or hpoo. about the
same. but poo is free and has multiple uses. like growing plants.. and mushrooms.

Thats a bit of an eye opener guys :ooo: I was working under the idea that poo helps yield and potency and had used nothing else in my spawn to bulk subs. With what you both have told me and the fact coir is only $4 a block I see little reason to continue using manure :thanx:
I imagine growing exotics like pans or mexicanas on bulk will still require a manure and straw/coir mix or have I been wrong there too?
