What if you could get good at anythng you want? 1

You know the rule. If you want to master something you have to put in 10000 of practice. That number has been proven to be true for pro athlete, chess masters, musicians and pretty much every other skill that can be mastered. In terms you can understand that's roughly 5 years at a full time job. Essentially in your lifetime you could master 10 skills.
But what about things I just want to learn but not master? I want to know how to decently draw something but I'm not aiming for the Louvre. I wanna learn a new language but not become a poet at it... How long do I have to practice to get there?
Take a guess before you scroll down. How long do you think it'll take you to become good enough at any skill?
Yu have a number in mind? Here's the answer (scroll below the video)
20 hours.
That's right. 20 hours. 45 minutes a day for a month and you can become good enough at pretty much anything. You can go from never having done that thing before to being good enough in only 20 hours. Learn guitar, draw, language, anything really.
Watch that video. Its a TED talk. Very inspiring.

Yeah I'm calling bullshit. 20 hours isn't shit for anything that requires a good amount of skill and in a lot of things the learning curve is quite steep.

I've seen this video before, it's an interesting concept for sure.

It's enough to get your head around the idea though, that's the main point. After 20 hours of study and practice, you should be able to make a few pieces of basic furniture at a wood shop for example - without being an expert on the craft. After 20 hours of learning and practice, you should be able to sing a little better than if you had never really sang before.
A high school semester course is usually about 60-80 hours worth of study in something - and skills can arguably be conveyed in the first third of those classes. That's the main point I think.

It's a cool concept and I think it is true for most things. But guitar was the hardest thing I ever learned and I don't think you can become proficient in 20 hours. You could probably learn to play a few songs with 4 chords but I don't consider that proficient.

yeah, i call bullshit too. what does it mean to be "good" at something? are we just talking about basic competence?
i have a few talents, and i would not have considered myself good at any of them by the 20 hour mark, but i probably would have considered myself basically competent

20 hours is enough for some things, not enough for others.
20 hours might be enough to become a decent pottery sculptor, or a good wood-worker or something.
But 20 hours is not nearly enough for things like learning a new language, or learning piano or other complex instruments, or learning jiu-jitsu or gymnastics or some type of advanced, complicated sports techniques.

20 hrs won't make you a master, but you can familiarize yourself with concepts etc.
Like how if one were to take a single autoshop class in high school, one would be familiar enough with cars to do simple repairs/not get ripped off badly at the mechanic shop. It doesn't mean that you're a master mechanic, just "good enough" compared to joe blow off the street. Same with martial arts. Will 20 hours make you a kung-fu master? No. Will 20 hours make you 20 hrs more trained than most people? Yes. That could potentially be good enough in most situations.

exactly.
The title says "get good" which basically means "be OK" and not a master at the skill.
