Does an agar plate covered in mycelium prevent contams?
    #23893858 - 12/04/16 01:01 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Just a hypothetical question. If some sort of contam spores landed on top of mycelium on an agar dish will they be able to germinate?

So a plate covered in mycelium helps to prevent contams?

Think he means it can still get contams

Regardless if the spores can germinate or not why does it matter? In every scenario where you use agar you will be introducing the contaminant to an environment where it will proliferate whether the spores have already germinated or not. Why would you ask this question?

I just wanted to know if a grown out petri dish was slightly contam resistant because the contam endospores/spores could not reach the agar. Maybe I don't understand the germination process. I was just curious and wanted to run it by the experts.

It is contam resistant, however if your agar becomes covered with contam spores or bacteria (from opening dish in open air or something dumb like that) and you inoculate grain with it, the spores (which couldn't germinate directly on colonized agar) may be able to germinate on the sterile grain and your'e fucked.

Its a race and if you have 100% colonised agar you are in the lead

Ok thats what I thought.:mushroom2:

Are there some contams that can colonize the mycelium itself?

Mycelium can eat spores.

This is why fully colonized subs are contam resistant. I have
had a plate that I took a wedge from and then left unsealed on my desk
for days and no mold grew over the mycelium. The plate was fully colonized too.

Mycelium "eats" by exuding enzymes which break down the surrounding material and then reabsorbs the nutrients through the cell walls.  Not very exciting

So you mean a slideshow doesn't need a badass theme song, just a boring upbeat one you'd listen to while washing dishes?
