Well water?
    #23893697 - 12/04/16 12:19 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Is it bad to use well water to hydrate your substrate for second and third flushes or is it high risk for contamination?

well water can be tricky for 1 reason.

water softeners.

most modern wells have them so that the mineral deposits dont build up in
the system requiring expensive repairs.
i encountered this when i grew at my parents home in the sticks.
slow growt, stalled jars, terrible yields. no bueno

water softeners replace the minerals with salt. salt is terrible for mushrooms.

Mainly depends on your well. With my well I have a hard time growing herbs without softening my water or adding magnesium. If you have to purchase water get spring water.Distilled is void of minerals and will leach them from whatever it is you grow.

Man, youve got some good answers on this thread.  I would just get spring water if you havent use distilled already

Distilled is void of minerals and will leach them from whatever it is you grow.

Where did this come from??

When you google it nothing shows up proving or confirming this. Not to mention that if your mycelium absorbs the water. So it would take those so called leached nutrients right back.

In the case of soil, nutrients bond to the soil molecules and it can be almost impossible to get some to release. This is a very complex issue and is not as simple as nutrients leaching out of the substrate and into water.

Huh.  Interesting.

How do I test my well water? A PH kit? I always thought well water was about as good as it gets.

As good as it gets for us, but mineral content may be off for other things like plants and fungi. It NEVER hurts to know the PH of your water. Very important for plants as it affects the nutrient uptake. for plants some nutrients can be locked out and unavailable to plants because the PH was out of whack. Not sure but assuming it can be similar to fungi. If I am right higher PH can help fight off contaminations.

Your well water is fine to use... If you drink it, your shrooms will too.

when i used well water i had the usual noob contams but nothing i could
document like azurs link.

why would that guy use water that gets a film on it? thats nasty.
i drink insane amounts of water everyday. and also sleep with a big glass..
never had slim in the water when it was from a well(brand new house/well system)

if your worried about bacteria in the water why not boil it?

to OP, make sure you dont have a water softener. i can not stress
how crappy it is to use.
