Orrisa India and Puerto Rican question
    #2382644 - 02/27/04 09:57 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Hi,

For anyone who's familliar with either of these strains, what's the best growing media? I have available just about everything from bird seed to Alfafa in bales.

I was wondering if using several different kinds of grains with ground up Alfalfa would be a good choice. I have a large PC for sterilization. Perhaps it doesn't make a difference but that's why I'm asking.

Also

Any suggestions for growing these particular strains I should know about?

Thanks!

Hi there Fee,

Why not the alfalfa?

How do you go about sterilizing the manure? Seems like if everything is sterilized it will have the least chance for infection.

alfalfa has seed heads and causes contams unless you sterilize but thats the worst of 2 ways to prepare bulk substrate
you should pasteurize it.
This will definitly ruduse contams in manure by alot
gourmet mushrooms love it

My thought was to innoculate several quart jars of barley/alfalfa or birdseed (or a mix) and then wait for all the jars to have mycelia. Then sterilize 6-7 pounds of barley/alfalfa or birdseed and get that to fruit.

I figured if I kept everything sterile I'd have a pretty good yield & low chance of contamination. I'm planning on using a dark carry-all with translucent lid to grow in & I'll sanitize the inside with sanitizer used for brewing.

If there's no benefit in using Alfalfa, I can always use manure, brewing barley or bird seed. I see many people using manure so it must be pretty easy to work with.

I've got a 22 quart pressure canner so I have no problem sterilizing instead of pastuerizing. I'm not sure how one pastuerizes (or sterilizes) manure, seems it would become like mud real quick.

If there's a way to use manure & not make it like a mud slide & if it's great for full yields, I need to know how to sterilize it.

Suggestions seeing as I have that huge pressure canner?

Cheers!
