what's a decent, affordable gaming laptop I should be saving up for?
    #23891213 - 12/03/16 04:32 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

don't have a fucking clue when it comes to these things, I'm a console gamer mostly...

$1,500 is the highest I'll go...

this looks promising.. I think?.. $1,199 and it's VR ready for when I can afford a VR headset.. alienware 13

again.. I really have no idea

any recommendations?... I'm mostly a simulator kind of guy if that makes a difference.

Buy a $1500 bible you sinner.

--------------------
How to get started in bulk:
Presto 23-Quart Pressure Cooker
BOD's Simple as FUCK Still Air Box
PastyWhyte's Easy Agar Tek
Munchauzen's Cultivation Video Series
How EvilMushroom666 Prepares His Grains (I use jars with Synthetic Filter Discs)
What is G2G? (Grain-to-Grain)
Damion5050's Coir Tek (I use 5.5 - 6 quarts of water instead of 4. Also ignore step 13 and ignore the monotub completely. The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary)
Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful)
Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

I'm pretty sure you can find a nice gamer laptop for cheaper with great specs unless you are trying to buy each component, then idk, its gonna be a bitch. Good luck.

Just go PC, for $1500 you'll get top hardware in USA.

GTX 1070, i5 6500, 8GB RAM and then go for a high refresh monitor with G-sync, presumably an ASUS or Acer one.

Laffin'

With that laptop you're looking at Doom on Medium or High 1080p for decent frames.
With the PC specs I listed you're looking at Ultra + custom tweaking 1440p.

Same price.

yeah that asus keeps coming up in my searches, seems to be the one I'm leaning towards so far...

nope, as much as I'd like to, it's gonna have to be a laptop... space issues mostly, and I'd much rather have something portable.

Then you are gonna suffer for it. 1500 doesn't get you a very good 'gaming' laptop. Be prepared to fork over at least 2k for a legit gaming laptop usually, unless the ROG or maybe Razer blade..
Still gaming on a laptop kind of blows... I guess it's great for portability but there's drawbacks too. You are paying more for less capable hardware with a laptop.
You can't really upgrade it much aside from maybe RAM or SSD. Heat issues. Have to stay plugged in anyway while gaming.
I mean don't get me wrong I gamed almost exclusively on a laptop for about 2 years and I was a hardcore raider at that time so it gets the job done.. but I will always prefer a desktop for any serious gaming for numerous reasons.

I get that... but like I said, space issues are the main thing... I literally have nowhere to put a desk for a desk top

I also travel a lot for work, spend a lot of time in shitty motel rooms in shitty, boring towns... and greyhounds, lots of greyhounds.

I've seen a few guys put a wall mount on their case of their pc. makes it not a whole lot bigger than a large laptop but much more portable and compact. Just gotta make sure theres good clearance between pc and monitor for FAE.

There are mini portable desktops these days. Alienware makes some good looking ones.

Understandable. In that case one of the Asus ROG laptops would probably suit your needs and meet your budget.

If you are going to be gaming on a laptop:
1. Invest in a laptop cooler. You will need it.
2. Make sure you clean the dust out of that thing frequently. Dust buildup is the number one cause of heat and early component death in a laptop. Especially a gaming laptop.
I HIGHLY recommend THIS instead of canned air. It will last for years and years and years, and is way more powerful than canned air. It pays for itself.

You have recommended this elsewhere in this subforum, it prompted me to pick one up.
As someone who does upkeep on three desktop towers, it is bloody amazing.
Could not recall the thread you suggested it in before, so thanking you for it here.:cookiemonster:

I've probably recommended it in 50 threads over the years
I wouldn't do so if I didn't think it wasn't totally fucking awesome.
Have had mine for maybe 6 years now? It's cleaned my PCs and laptops numerous times. Have let friends borrow it to clean their PCs.
It's cleaned the interior of my car. It cleans fans. It blows dust and dries off pretty much anything you need it to. It has far more uses than just cleaning dust out of PCs.
It's paid for itself probably 50 times over by now. It is absolutely amazing.

Fuck canned air :cookiemonster:

How long does a good gaming laptop last I'd be worried that with all that power it would burn itself out a lot sooner than a desktop would?

How long it lasts cannot be answered really, a lot of that is up to you.

How long you use it per day, do you turn it off when your not gaming, do you have a laptop cooler, how often do you clean it, do you chain smoke cigarettes while @ the computer, do you use it in only on tables or on the bed directly on the sheets, whats the ambient temp of your computer space, when it's in it's normal spot is there adequate air flow?

Ooh yeah. The basic design of a laptop does not lend itself to air flow. I have desktops from the early 90's that still run at the top of their respective game. Desktops also are 500x's easier to clean the interior of, which adds potential decades.

If your serious about gaming, get a desktop and make it work. Just the upgrade potential alone is worth it. A  1070  $400  a ,        .      .
