Spray painting the bottom of a monotub?

Doesn't that seem like it would be a lot easier than putting a plastic bag in it? I mean, if you're doing it to make cleanup easier then there's that, but I personally don't think cleanup is difficult so if your goal is to just reduce side pinning, is this a reasonable option?

(Grain-to-Grain) Damion5050's Coir Tek (I use 5.5 - 6 quarts of water instead of 4. Also ignore step 13 and ignore the monotub completely. The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary) Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful) Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

thats not what a liner is for at all. the liner clings to the substrate so that when it shrinks it doesnt create a gap and nice microclimate for pinning.

It is better for cleaning up to use a liner. You can tape the bottom but side pinning is not caused of the light. It happens because of the nice micro climate between the tub and the substrate.

Painting the tub won't reduce side pinning in the slightest, it's not the lack of light that prevents side pinning.
A liner works because the mycelium sticks to it, making the space between liner and sub an inhospitable environment to pin.

i stopped using liners a month ago. they didnt stop side pinning really but my skillz are better so its less an issue. i suck at cutting liners. also i like seeing through my tub to make sure my spawn is mixed up good. nobody likes seeing this... terrible mixing on my part.

i wouldnt of known if i couldnt see through.

Good point about the mixing but I do it this way: I take a fresh bin bag and put in my colonized grain jars and substrate. I mix it inside the bin bag until it is mixed well. Then I put it into the trays. I cut the liners with a scalpel. I don't like it but IME it does reduce side pinning.
