Grass fed.
    #23890245 - 12/03/16 10:58 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

I just saw a sale at the local Safeway. There beef is grass fed. I've never really put much thought into what my food eats. Don't cows only eat grass? Is the cow happier that it was grass fed before it makes a delicious burger or steak?

Does that deliciousness make me happy because the cow was happy. Well up until being killed and made into delicious things.

Yes cows eat grassy material, however I prefer grain-fattened cattle- better marbling and better flavor imho.  I believe the grass-fed thing is just a selling point and a price hiker.

Most cattle eats some grass during its life, but grass-fed means its finishing feed was grass as well.  Leaner less fatty meat.

Really it should be a mix of both grass and grain as well as other fodder, but agriculture in the US makes it one or the other.

Ya that's what I think it's obviously just a ploy oh a grass fed cow must be good. However it has no real relevance.

Cows like grass. I've seen tons of cows and all they really do is eat grass in a field. I dunno what cows qualify as happiness but they look a lot happier than me. I think.

I'd be content if I just ate grass in a field all day. Knowing my inevitable demise is being eaten. Created for delicious meat. I dunno about cannibalism but I bet I'm not as delicious as a cow.

I am very well versed in grass stain removal. My knees were green for years.

I thought you ate grass. I ate grass once as a kid. Bad idea I immediately went and got a burger.

I'm actually allergic to grass. I helped my friends ma pitch some hay in Montana. I broke out in hives.

Super allergic to grass I don't roll around in it or anything. As many movies have taught me that is what people do. Not me. It's sort of shitty.  I want to lay out in grass but I can't.  Fuck you movies.

I don't see cows grazing corn fields.

That really all I have to say.

Grass-fed beef is supposedly healthier, but Americans prefer the taste of corn-fed beef.

I prefer grass fed beef. A lot of new research I've read over the years indicate much greater health benefits and vitamin content in grass fed beef. The cows take longer to mature than grain fed, and generally have less health problems. Pasture raised cows that are supplemented with grain and hay are still pretty good too IMO.

I buy all my meat from the farmers market from a guy that pasture raises their cows. The meat is much darker red and has a beefier flavor and it's more lean. I have to usually add fat to it, like butter or bacon fat.

There's a big difference in ethically farm raised meat compared to mass produced feed lot meat. One thing I have noticed is the pink ground beef from the grocery store ages in the fridge differently. The outside stays nice and pink but on the inside it turns brown. With the meat I get directly from farmers does the opposite. It turns brown on the outside and stays fresh in the middle. Not sure why, but then again, the meat from the grocery store tastes like shit once I got used to real farm raised meat.

I've never seen a corn fed cow. I thought cows only eat grass. I learned a lot today.

Free range grass fed meat is some some of the best, I think the point is they are eating natural stuff be it grains or grass off of the ground.

Wild cows don't eat grain. Their stomachs can't digest it very well.

all cattle is grass fed, finishing is when they're fed grains, silage and
agricultural wastes such as sugar beet pulp in order to fatten them.

the real change in flavor comes from aging, if you've ever had unaged beef
you'd think it's gross, it's almost inedible it tastes so bad

grains are grasses and they damn sure will eat grains if they stumble into a wheat
field just as they'll eat corn and anything else. grains are like crack to cows

Several close friends own 10's of thousands of acres and ranch cattle. The cattle graze on the lush grass then rounded up and sold at auction most end up in a grain lot then slaughter house.
Yard eggs taste better and have a harder shell than the generic white eggs.
Fish I pull up or shoot out of the gulf taste better than any of the fish at the store. Shrimp and crab too. I never buy fish at a restaurant or store.  If I have to buy eggs I pay the extra for the brown free range but usually I buy from friends as I don't have chickens anymore.
