At it again...

Hi,
i havent grown shrooms for roughly half a year now, and now that school is coming to an end (final exams next week), I wanna go at it again.

Now, in the past i havent had even pinning, and dunno why. I think I just didnt wait long enough for the casing to be properly "penetrated" with mycelium growth in the fear of overlay. My questionis, hwy I cant just let the top of the casing be colonised to a great deal, and the just putting about 1 - 3 mm (you get the picture...)of casing on top. That way im sure that its properly colonised.
My fear is , that the mycelium which has once built overlay is no more able to produce shrooms, despite putting additional soil on top.
Is this true, or should I try my idea?

dont let it get completly covered. once you get several quarter sized spots(assuming a casing of 1/4" or more) cover those spots with more casing. you should't have to do this more than once befor pinning startes.

"that the mycelium which has once built overlay is no more able to produce shrooms" i dont know about this but but it will be harder to produce pins with overlay. the problem usually with overlay is it prevents the casing from absorbing water. when you mist the water just sits on top and can cause bacteria and rot problems and the casing will not hold the water that the shrooms need.
