Monotub holes placement

Ok guys so my rye is getting close to full colonization and I have a clear tote from IKEA this one it measures 22.4*15.4*11 (in) and I'm planning to follow this tek: coir tek
But since the tote is a bit on the short side (height-wise) and it's my first time doing it I'm thinking I could put the substrate in first and THEN drill the holes so that I have them placed ideally just above the sub. Now what worries me is the plastic bits that will inevitably fall in the sub while drilling, but on the other hand they have no nutritional value and shouldn't cause any harm. Is my line of thinking correct?

Use water to see roughly where the substate surface will lie, mark the line, drill holes, spawn.

Well see, that would be a problem since I have 3 quart jars of spawn (one beeing only half full and one spawn bag with unknown amount of spawn in it (roughly about 3 qt though) and I don't know how many qts of coir one brick will make, otherwise It would be doable

This may be for you
Nah, I really want to try Pastywhite's micropore tek for FAE holes and I want the tub to be as set and forget as possible...

Since a 3 inch substrate is favoured in mono tubs this size, you should try to chose the sub:spawn ratio so that you have a three inch sub.
So just make the holes at 4 inch level.
If you don't know at all how much spawn you have, you will have to roll the dices a bit, maybe you have to throw some spawn away if it's to much or you have to add some more CVG to reach the 3 inch.
Good Luck!

You'll do fine mate. I just make my holes at 4 inch, it's the easiest way to go. If I have to less spawn, I add a bit more CVG, if I have to much spawn, I either reduce the ratio and use less CVG or I use the rest of the spawn to make a small tray for experiments (open air maybe) or whatever.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is CVG you refer to?

It's Coir + Vermiculite + Gypsum.
It's mainly the Sub you get when doing the Damion Tek, but most of the people add some gypsum to it.
Means put your Coir Brick into the bucket, add 2 quarts of Verm, add the boiling water like in Damions Tek. Then let it soak a while like in Damion Tek. But before you stir everything up (Step 7 in Damoins Tek) you add a Tablespoon of Gypsum to it

Thanks for clearing that up.. btw I see you are from Germany and therefore you are using metric system, do you actually use quarts or do you just use approximation 1qt=1l since they are quite close?

I use 1 qt = 1 liter
Something you have to learn is, that most teks are not mathematical science. You have to learn to rely on your eye, hands, nose etc.
