Contamination in Spent Grain Substrate?
    #23887860 - 12/02/16 02:40 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hi there! This is my first time inoculating commercial spawn of Pleurotus ostreatus. The substrate is either spent grain, spent grain+cardboard or spent grain+cardboard+coffe grounds. The growth and distribution are apparently fine, but I am not sure about the smell. In some jars it is rather acid and similar to dirty socks... Moreover, I can see some tiny black spots, but can't tell for sure that they aren't little wood chips coming from the commercial spawn.

What do you think, based on the picture below?

Besides, I am growing this in a room where I spend most of the day. What do you think of the healthy risks associated with this procedure?

I'm not sure what that mycelium is supposed to look like but that jar looks very bacterial to me

The one give away is how wet the grain is. Usually excess water like in yours causes bacterial issues. If you look around each grain where it is sticking to the glass you will see  cloudy milky rings. Now that either could be starch from the grain or bacteria. The biggest give away is how the mycelium is growing. If you notice it is growing in patches like it is trying to avoid areas.

Wetness + cloudy substances + patchy growth + smell if apparent = signs of bacteria.

When ever you get spawn inspect it thoroughly. If you suspect it is dirty put it to agar and check it. Take photos and then call your supplier and tell them they sent you a bad batch. Most places will work with you. If you feel up to it you could also clean the culture on agar.

One thing that is stressed on shroomery is buying prepared spawn from vendors unless it is from a commercial grade supplier like Amycel. I can guarantee it you will have a better experience making your own.

If you need a new culture PM me and I will send you a few agar wedges of a nice Blue Oyster I have in my collection.
