I'm running a batch in my pasteurizer right now, and going to mix straw, CSH, and about 10% alfalfa pellet supplements. Plan on inoculating with kings and elms.
sure! All I did was get the water adjusted to 13-14ph (about 3-4 cups hydrated lime per 55 gallon load), which some may say is too high but I never had an issue, and mix in about a cup of oxyclean. Let the bags soak over night and pull them the next morning. Now I've never heat pasteurized CSH so you may have better luck steam drying them, but make sure you allow an ample amount of time to let them dry out a bit. Before I got a hold on this my batches were way too wet.
I think you'll have stellar success mixing with straw and the soy, but in my opinion I would ditch the heat pasteurization. Only for convenience sale. Truly the most easy and consistent method I've ever used. Plus, if you do batches everyday, you can just reuse that very same lime water. Not to mention its way cheaper thank propane. I should also add I had pretty bad contams until I added the oxyclea After that every batch was trouble free.
Wow, oxyclean would have never guessed that. Very simple method, thanks for sharing.

I'm honestly not sure what the threshold is, but I never did more than two. There's the whole two dunk rule for heat pasteurization so I figured I'd play it safe.

for sure! it was that aloha write up that got me interested in it it was either drake or lipa that told me about sodium percarbonate. I'm sure you may have seen the article before, but for those that have not http://www.alohaculturebank.com/low-tech-growing.html#.WEzHuHrnZAg
just out of curiosity are you guys still only running poly tube logs for oysters? if so why not supplemented blocks?

yea I think you mentioned it to me when you were graciously helping me work out my lime pasteurization woes. Thanks again. Are y'all still doing shiitake only at the moment?

no, our oyster production is nearly 3x the shiitake in terms of pounds at the moment. We are getting about 1-2# first flush on 6.5# bags. 60% soy hull pellets and 40% wood pellets. 50-55% moisture. I think our order for monday is 270# oysters and 60# shiitakes. usually it's more like 100# shiitakes.

damn dude where do you get rid of that much fungus? And where can I find this place;)
60% soy hulls? hmm. How does this compare to wheat bran? what do you guys pay per sack of this stuff? Very interested as I just switched over to supp.sawdust blocks for everything.

We sell all of our product to a wholesale distributor in nashville which is based out of louisville. So we just started sendin some up there as well. I Def could not compete at a wholesale level without the soy hulls. They are available at every co op I've been to locally. But depending on where they are milled I've paid from $9 to $4 per 50lb. You could probably go down to 40% soy hulls without losing much yield.

Nope the soy hull pellets are the supplements. It's the equivalent of 50-50 wheat bran - sawdust in terms of nitrogen. The biggest advantage of soy hulls is thay they are mostly cellulose which oysters gobble up.

I need to find a distributor here in memphis. I would so much rather do 1 or two drop offs a week and done.
Is that formula your same supplement strategy for shiitake? Also been meaning to ask you since I saw it, how is that spawn inoculator working for you? I was drooling over that thing for a while.

we still do 80/20 wood pellets wheat bran for shiitakes. i don't think they like the soy pellets. The spawn dispensor has been a godsend for my shoulders. it's not terribly faster than by hand but I can do 400 bags in about 4 hours by myself without shaking. Maybe 400 in 3 hours with someone else sealing them.

So you use 20% bran without mutants on your shiitake? Maybe it's the RR kool-aid everybody has been drinking around here, but I thought the general consensus was 5% for shiitake. I'd love to hear your experience with that. Thanks for the word on the soy hulls I'm going to try some on my next batch. Also, you don't shake?

Okie dokie just an update on the state of things. Finally got the wood stove water heater hooked up and it's running like a charm! Basically just a water pump that runs water through copper pipes in the barrel and through to a heat exchanger with my circulation fan blowing on it. Here's a couple pics.

Glad I got this up and running before January. Also some rounds of king oyster that are about to go into the mush house.
 and shiitake are pinning!
All and all I'm pretty satisfied at the moment. I'll keep you guys posted!

cool man.
I'm getting ready to pick up a wood stove and car radiator in a couple days for a similar setup. Any chance you can post a shot of your copper coil in that barrel stove? What temps. are you getting ?
I was planning on running my coil around the outside of the stove and bury it all in a sand and brick housing. Possibly routing it thru salvaged water heaters so I don't have to stoke a fire all night long.
Any thermostats in your design? How's your humidity holding up with that heat?

I like how it's not really closed off so if something happens it wont explode from steam building up. Hows the rubber hose holding up to the heat? Did you make the copper coil yourself or buy it? digging the thread
