My Small Scale Mushroom Farm * 7
    #23887707 - 12/02/16 01:57 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hello all!
Longtime user, first time posting. I have been learning and growing for years from the vast amount of information in here and I thought I'd finally share some of my progress. Been growing oysters primarily for a farmers market and small co-op CSA I used to work with, but recently we parted ways and I am exploring new markets. Used to grow 50lbs/week, but we are moving into the 100-150lb/week mark. I primarily grow oysters(brat, elm, kings, pinks) seasonally and we just introduced Aa sworbelt into the mix as well as the tried and true Le3782. I have a lot of connections for local restaurants here, plan to attend one market and will also be working with a large food hub that supplies a 400 person CSA, so that should keep me plenty busy. We just moved recently and had to rebuild everything. its been a long process, but I am excited to get started again!
Heres a few pics of the operation.

Some rounds of 3782 on 5% supp. fuel pellet blocks.  browing up nicely.

The incubation room. I am adding more shelving.

My AA7X's and 941's

Cold storage until I pony up the cash for a walk-in with a cool bot.

Lab

A few shots of the greenhouse and ventilation system. In one of them you can see the wood stove I'm building for heating.

And a few glamor shots of some pinks and browns at my last place.

Anywho just wanted to introduce myself and my set up and say thank you for this place. Looking forward to continuing to share and learn with you all, friends.

-Scott

Great Job!
You may want to rethink the shelving though.
Those metro-shelves are a bitch to clean, and they'll start to rust after a few months.

Cool man, sounds like your around the same scale as i am. Are you growing on sawdust bags using just those for 41at pressure cookers? Whats with that hose going from your house to the greenhouse? Is that sucking air from your house?

Yeah I'm curious about that ducting too... so your fresh air is coming preheated from the house until the wood stove can take over? Is there a humidifier inside somewhere that we can't see? Also, can you explain the fan/box pictured in your greenhouse. Is it just a filter box?

Do you typically just hand water your oysters?

What dimensions are your greenhouse?

Not to blow you up with questions but I'm super interested in your setup right now, as I'm getting ready to wrap my new mushhouse in a few days and set it up proper.

Looks good dude.

Very cool. I watch your videos all the time! And yes just 5lb supplemented fuel pellet blocks. I can got 9 blocks in each 941 and aa75x even though its a bit of a squeeze. I reinforced the rack inside to hold the extra load, so that's 36 bags a run. I have to cook pretty much every day.
The tube is 10" insulated ducting. I have it tapped into a floor vent in my house for help heating during the winter. My greenhouse is normally run passively without any attempt to air condition or heat. I normally leave the vents on the back wide open and have roll up sides for the spring and summer and cover the vents and sides with insect netting, but I just got this rigged up for the winter and so far it's given me about a 15 degree temperature bump so that's exciting.I also have a inflation blower for double layering the plastic with a little pocket of air which I think will help with my heat loss.

Thanks man. Yes the ducting just helps stabilize temps and provide less frigid fresh air throughout the winter. The box is just a plenum I built out of wood with a clear rubber sealant coating to house my fan and in the future the heat exchanger that will be connected to the wood stove. That plastic tubing is usually connected to the box. It inflates when the fan is on and helps  distribute the air a little more evenly.
The greenhouse is about 16'x18'.
For humidity I have fogging misters all along the top of the greenhouse connected to a solar timer that turns them on and off about 5 times a day and I give a good spray down on the floor and ceiling about 2-3 times a day.Ill post a close up of them. They are really great if you are on a budget, wish they had just a leetle bit smaller particle size, but they get the job done. Got them from dripworks. I have found if you just have them on a cycle timer you will over water almost every time. Mushy oysters are no fun!

What kind of setup are you building?

Believe me, I already regret getting them  :facepalm3:
Nothing a little marine paint and waterproof sealant can't fix, I suppose.

Will you write a little more about the heat exchanger,  wood stove and how you are integrating them into your grow?

Definitely. The concept is to have a water bucket with a pump that forces water through coiled copper pipe that is mounted inside the wood stove, the  stove heats the water then flows to the heat exchanger (aka a car radiator) which will be mounted to the fan inside my plenum box, fan blows on radiator forcing hot air out, the the water flows out of the heat exchanger and back into the water bucket and then the process repeats itself.
So the plan is to use the stove in the nighttime during winter and early spring and on the really frigid days during winter. It will eat up a lot of wood, but luckily wood is pretty cheap and I only need it three months out of the year. Memphis stays pretty warm.
I've also been having some fun using my old agribond row cover to fit over the shelves at night. Everything underneath the row cover gets a 5 degree temperature bump and the air from the house hvac gives me about another 15 degrees. So even if it's 30F outside I can easily keep it in the 50's, any colder than that and I'll just fire up the wood stove. I doubt it'll get much use until late Jan/Feb.
Just trying to get creative with temperature control as the winter approaches. Fun stuff:rockon:

P.s if you have a little more cash to throw at the project, the concept I'm describing has been perfectly engineered and prefabricated by various greenhouse heating companies. This is just the poor man's way to get 're done. If you are more electrically handy than I am, a couple 10kW heating elements could achieve the same function.

Very nice. Love the simplicity of a hoophouse. Do you plan to make it a passive solar house or are you covering and insulating?
Very interested as you are using a similar design. Always love hearing about others solutions to the same problems.
Oh and heres are the foggers I mentioned. I use a mix of the two-way and the four-way.

It'll be covered and insulated except for a narrow strip along the ceiling to let in natural sunlight.
