My guess is that RogerRabbit's referring to something a little different...the genetic diversity at a spot in general. For example, if you found a place that had a number of colonized little sections of woodchips and fruitings here and there, it'd accordingly be better to have those mushrooms sporulate the area to the utmost (for genetic diversity) than to harvest all the mushrooms early and provide for the growth only of the existing mycelium.

"than to harvest all the mushrooms early"

or to harvest them at all.

That's incredibly intriguing, if you can find a link to that study please send it to me. I would assume that amount of fruit bodies would depend on the amount of available food. Do you remember how many seasons they studies this, I wonder if they had diminishing returns.

David,
can I ask where do you buy the alder woodchips?  thanks, I'm looking at 45$ shipped to sf for 10 pounds of chips and 20 pounds sawdust

I just went to Ace Hardware and bought bags of alder smoking chips. One brand they carried was relatively inexpensive...$3 per 2 pound bag. If you end up needing the sawdust, look into "alder smoking pellets," which becomes moist sawdust upon wetting with hot water, and which runs about $20 per 20 lb bag online. Even cheaper are "hardwood smoking pellets," which go for as low as $8 per 40 lb bag.

Ace also has the smoking pellets...but in smaller quantities. I picked up this awesome three-pack when I was there.

thanks David,
question for the community:
are fresh chips for growing mushrooms better than smoking woodchips? or once soaked in water they are the same?
sorry if it's the wrong place for this question

Those sawdust pellets can be used for the woodlover pf tek

Take your standard pf tek recipe and substitute half of the brf for hydrated hardwood pellets. The pellets can be found at most hardware stores in the grilling section, fairly inexpensive. The pellets absorb a lot of water and expand quite a bit. You can steam sterilize these woodlover cakes for 2 hours as per standard recipe I believe. Once cake is fully colonized you can then hydrate, crumble, and distribute to your spot with fresh hardwood chips.
These cakes will support most woodloving mushrooms. Thanks RR

gym luteofolius with a thin casing but same cake recipe. However, I have no exp with steam sterilization as I only use PC. Ps. Alenii pretty much has to be planted especially for the noob.

They're the same...in fact most if not all mail order woodchips are kiln-dried like smoking chips. But soaking the chips is an inefficient way to hydrate 'em and often fails to complete. The best way is to simmer 'em for 1-2 hours (with a lid) until all the woodchips are sunk to the bottom. Then drain.

In my 25 yrs if extensive harvesting in the Seattle area, I found it rare to have patches fruit strongly for more than 2 seasons. In fact, I have found extreme fruitings of thousands which never produced again. The reason for this, I believe, is that the organism will consume and break down the available wood material in a given area (woodlovers basicaly turn woodchips into dirt - that is their role in the environment). Most places in my Seattle experience did not have woodchips replenished regularly enough to fruit in perpetuity and I wasnt driving around with a truck full of woodchips... There was one spot that was right by a busstop in downtown which was replenished often and it fruited for 5 or 6 yrs. Thats why you must spend most of your time every season seeking new spots; cuz nothing good lasts forever. Little life lesson from the little guys.

It's a good bet that the chain stores mushrooms are found at, use the same landscaping sub contractors at other near by locations.
The mushroom study i read about was in Oregon and it was about pulling vs cutting. Pulling had no adverse effects. Cutting showed slight decline.

I always carefully twist and pull free....I'll even pull stems other people leave behind. Just be careful not to disturb the mycellium too much. If you do end up with chunks of mycelliated chips, spread that shit around. Introducing new patches more than mitigates minor impacts to an existing patch which isnt gonna last forever anyway. Supprisingly, most folks, including many harvesters, don't realize that that base of stem is actually the most potent part of the fruiting body. By the way, Bay Area hunters, I'm headed up right now to little looking around in your neck of the woods to do a little looking around. If anyone wants to meet up for coffee and swap stories or whatever, PM me. Now that this is just an occasional hobby for me, I'm happy to share my kniwlege.

I recall it was an informal study done over many years, possibly decades? I likely read it here or at maybe a mushroom-observer.
