A monotub inside a SGFC? If that understanding is correct I wouldn't bother. Wouldn't get proper FAE.
If you're just opening that tub in the SGFC it's looking pretty good! Maybe a few more holes in the SGFC? (I can't remember the specs on the hole spacing)

Just make a mini mono. A big tray like that in a SGFC covers too much of the perlite. Air needs to pass up through the bottom holes and the moist perlite.

I was just thinking of trying a different style grow I have been doing the mono tubs and found that small tub and have an even smaller one. I was just gonna fill it colonize it and open it up in the sgfc to fruit. I'm just trying to clean up my last 2 jars before I start up with some clean clone cultures from some of my monos.

Truth. I put a large tray inside a SGFC once. Performance was poor. The surface of the substrate (no casing) bruised from being so dry, even with misting. Mono tub is your best bet.

Make mono buckets. Or hell make one mono bucket and one jar g2g. And do two monos next time. With a heavy 1/2 inch casing

I'm going through a similar dilemma myself.
Shotgun fruiting chambers seemed the way to go at first, but I then realized I don't want to do little cakes anymore.
I've also noticed during a preliminary run with the SGFC that conditions are still way too dry, no matter how much I mist my grain cake. I think I'll have to dial it in with micropore tape.

I'm seriously considering taping up the holes with micropore, and turning them into monotubs.
Sorry for the thread hijack but this is a very similar situation and I need to convert my tubs soon before all of my manure trays colonize.

i think your shotgun holes are way to big on the amount of holes you got there 2 inch apart 1/8 inch drill bit will be better. but i prefer mono on the second grow.

It also seems that the perlit layer is too thin. Combined with the big holes it's obvious why your conditions were to dry.
With this hole sizes you at least ne a 5 inch perlit layer I think.

I don't think it's considered thread jacking as long what you are discussing is pertinent to the OP. Even if you added three more inches of perlite, the setup still wouldn't work properly. Those trays are huge! Holes are big too. Converting to a mono would be a good idea. IMO, SGFCs are better suited for cakes.

yeah you need way more perlite in there and you need to set the sgfc up properly, elevate it off the shelf and get itout in the open. when you cover the bottom your perlite is more or less useless.

also that tray inside the sgfc is going to hinder the passive air flow.
trays in a mono tub work great for me!

Alright so before I go and do something foolish again, how should I go about turning these beautiful SGFC into monotubs?
I was thinking that the first step would be taping up the bottom and sides with micropore tape until sufficient moisture is dialed in.
I'm on the fence about removing the perlite entirely or just letting it sit there under the future substrate.
Then wrapping it in a garbage bag just for colonizing.
Anything else?
Thanks for your input guys.

Taping the bottom and the top holes won't be enough. You have to tape almost all holes, just leave the three holes on the long side and the one hole at the top side untaped and make it 1,25" big.
You don't need Perlit at all. And wrapping it is unnecessary.

Mushboy is right by the way. Use this tote as a storage tote for mushroom stuff (like I did with my old SAB) to have everything at one place and buy a new tote for your mono tub. I recommend to start with two mini monos instead of one big mono, just to not throw all eggs in one basket you know.

Tubs all day guys feel free to post. As long as the mods don't mind. I haven't tried trays. Yet can I put a tray inside a mono tub?
