Strange brown polypore
    #2388343 - 02/29/04 06:23 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

I found this in my garden under a cardboard box, its freezing outside and i don't know how long it has been there.

Location: The Netherlands, former sea bed (40 years dry) no wood/trees nearby only some cardboard debri, Clay/sandy soil, some grass and other weeds

No scent so far a can tell, looks like a polypore so no spores or Gills, surface feels like leather but is very delicate

Could anyone tell me what it is? will make a culture of it later today (clone from the surface and piece of the white Myc. on the bottom

Is it growing on wood or a fallen branch? Looks to me like Hirneola auricula-judae. These often grow in parks on fallen branches or logs of the tree Sambucus nigra, which usually doesn't grow wild in Poland at least.

Otherwise, check out the jelly fungi: Tremellales.

Good luck with cloning that, it may be tough.

looks like an ascomycete to me....

I've found similar fungi out morel hunting, can't think of the latin name atm, but I think the common name is pig's ears or something  .

DH

Edit: Discina perlata is the species I was thinking of, I don't know if it's the same thing you have there, but it looks pretty similar...  If it's not those it might be some type of Aleuria or Peziza.

That's a cup fungus, and, based on appearance alone, probably in the genus Peziza or Discina. Unfortunately, identification to species for these cup fungi is very difficult. They are typically among the early spring fungi.

It is not an Auricularia, as it's not growing from wood. I find them regularly, and they look like ears frowing from a log. Incidentally, Tree Ears are one of the very few closely related mushrooms that are easy to identify.

Many of these cup fungi are very poisonous. Definitely DO NOT EAT. Since identification is so difficult, reliable information about the edibility of species is fairly unreliable.

Happy mushrooming!
