What the fuck is the point? It has been proven tv put you into hypnosis.

I don't watch T.V anymore at all, if I had one of those public access boxes I probably would but I have Netflix and Hulu and anything else not one those two I can find online for free.

It's all in how you do it. Are you thinking while you watch TV? Do you carry on your own side of the perceptual conversation? I don't think it has to hypnotize you, but it's very easy for it to do so which is why people watch TV to relax.

So many noobs in this thread. It is a matter of 1 2 3 and 4.

1.) You get a t.v. Because you have to have that shit.

2.) You then get internet because thats how we are here.

3.) After that you obtain a computer/laptop.

4.) The final piece is an HDMI hookup.

You now have access to every single movie/tv show/ video in the world (almost).

The Internet's no problem though, right?

I don't watch actual tv broadcasts any more really (have an antenna but it's not hooked up at the moment), but there are some great tv shows out there. The main thing setting TV drama apart from movies is the time format. With any entertainment medium there's going to be a lot of crap, but some people choose to put together quality stuff.

sometimes it's alright to have broadcasting doing it's thing in the traditional sense, but it's dying out, and essentially, no one is buying it anymore, because people won't be duped into 'waiting' for anything these days. they want it now. so streaming is the best choice.

and who just sits and watches TV?

boooring. snack and yell at the TV, that works much better.

Yeah pay tv is an increasingly shitty value proposition these days, unless maybe you really care about sports broadcasts or something.

Such a relief to not have to watch an ad ever again, or pay $60 bucks for a shitty NES game without any way to try it, or $20 bucks for a CD. Kids have it so fucking good nowadays.

I think the quality of tv shows has definitely definitely gone up. The quality of movies on the whole I think has dipped, interestingly.

I do have basic cable and HBO and a bunch of free on demand shit that literally came with my 50 dollar a month internet, but I don't use it. I mostly use netflix and amazon prime - when I'm chilling by myself I usually prefer to listen to music and read or internet than sit and watch tv, but sometimes I use it for background noise. I use those accounts more when I'm with other people and as such..my friends definitely use my netflix account way more than I do.

Well I have a monitor sized one that I use as a computer monitor - I have two projectors though - I live in a studio apartment so it makes more sense space wise.

It's literally called a TV Program.  "We now return you to your regularly scheduled PROGRAMMING."

Says the person whose user name is named after a TV persona.

You literally just said TV shapes culture, now you are saying the people who let the TV shape their culture are stupid.

I mean we're programmed by a lot of things, tv and media is one for sure, but society programs all of us.

There's nothing inherently wrong with programming, it's necessary even just to learn basic decency in order to coexist with all the other meat machines in the world.

Unfortunately, there are many sides to this coin and there's many woes(both on a personal, national/societal, and global level) due to the way we have been conditioned by tv and media. If it wasn't the television, it would be something else - before that the radio stood in it's place, even art/music/theatre has to some extent stood as that placeholder throughout human history - among other things like wide spread religion - which is not automatically terrible, you could honestly largely credit the Catholic Church for dragging much of Europe out of the dark ages and triggering the renaissance - and where there is the spread of information, there is the spread of ideas, and therefore innovation.

The problem is that we as people have a personal responsibility, IMO, to think for ourselves, not fall under the dogma of propaganda and try and sort through all this information getting shoved down our throats in order to find the most objective and reasonable truth. People don't do that often enough, it is a dangerous flaw in our society.

Mainstream media brainwashes you to push a narrative. I use adblock and filter content whenever I use Youtube.

People who say they don't watch TV still watch it, they simply don't watch it on an actual television. They use Netflix or Hulu instead.

Well yeah, in moderation it's totally okay. But TV and gaming addictions impair people on a psychological level (until, like all addictions, it is 'treated')

I watch TV. I mainly use it for the background noise though. There's not much really interesting on anymore. History, Discovery and National Geographic channels have all gone to shit. Very little in the way of documentaries now. I'm rarely able to catch what I actually want to watch when it's on anymore. I'm just so used to the sound of having it on when I use my laptop. I'm making the switch to Netflix and Cravetv right now. Going to cut off my cable really soon. It's just too damn expensive to use as background noise. I guess I'll just have to stream mundane shit for the sound now (I hate the radio).

Watching T.V. is almost an out of date term.
When I think of watchin T.V., I think of tuning to a specific channel,
at a specific time to watch a show you planned to watch. And this also includes watching all the commercials they show. I think of T.V. as a linear stream you do not have control over.

I havent watched T.V. in YEARS, more or less even OWN a TV.
However do I hand select shows that I find to be fine art and containing a literary level? Absolutely , on my own time.

I do alot of YouTube, if that counts.

I used to watch alot of discovery and animal planet and the history channel... But basically stopped when they randomly decided that their viewers wanted reality shows more than education and reenactments.

Tho I admit (and I think most of us would) if I had no internet or access ot hulu and Netflix I'd watch cable TV.

I watch football and other sports on occasion too. Even still I prefer catching highlights online.

You eat cheetos and watch the super bowl on LSD???
You know you are doing it all wrong, right?
:haha:
I watch the fuck out of my TV as well.  Now that my only job is drinking beer, banging my wife and indulging into my favorite hobbies I have plenty time to get all comfy in my cali king pillow top with my mini fridge, my bong and my Apple TV and worry about nothing other than what's for dinner and what kind of booze I might want with what snack and which smoke to smoke.
When I was working the bar side at the pub constantly had sports on on the weekends and whatever trash the lawyers and day drinkers wanted before 4pm throughout the week.
No cable in my house in years and years, mostly worthless drivel.
But I am definitely NOT one of the hip young folks who are enlightened above watching TV.
I enjoy, it is relaxing, and sometimes I can get my knob slobbed while binging Netflix and chugging down a few pints.  Life is good, I worked hard to get here, damn right imma enjoy the fuck out of it.

I watch me some TV, mostly on weekends.

Yeah, junk food for the brain, mindless drivel etc.  That is the precise reason why I watch.  I spend all day thinking about science, problem solving etc. When I get home, the last thing I want to do is contemplate deep shit.  I'll happily watch people fighting over TV's on pawnstars.

It is suggestion,  they use familiarity under the hypnosis everyone is usually in.  Everyone that feels comfortable doesn't reject the programming.

I enjoy westerns.  Usually just background entertainment while using the iPad for something more interactive and educational.

you guys don't know what it was like growing up with the TV I did. I had a pair of vice grips to turn the broken knob and some tin foil on the antennae!

Same here, but replace foil with coat hanger wire. My dad was a wizard with that stuff. Antenna still has a negative stigma but these days most broadcasts are in HD. Under bad conditions it's less watchable than a bad analog signal though (MPEG artifacts and it just cuts out entirely).

Antenna HD is substantially better quality than cable HD.  Antenna signal is uncompressed, cable is highly compressed.

My mom had to rent VCR's to watch VHS on a black and white TV, then around 2nd grade we got a 13in color TV which made us feel like we were moving up in life, I understand your TV struggle, the struggle is real.

I have gotten to the point of muting all commercials when I watch TV. Those are the real mind control things! I enjoy TV, I watch a lot of movies on cable and a few series. 90% of shows and TV are crap though.

Same. Commercials are annoying.

But if its a movie preview or tv show preview i unmute it.

Occassonially i see a really good commercial that i must unmute but most commercials are annoying as fuuuuuuuck.

Yeah I've heard similar, cable providers have more of an incentive to lower the bitrates to squeeze more channels through the pipe. I'm pretty sure ATSC is still compressed though (MPEG-2 or H.264). Truly uncompressed HD video requires very high bitrates.

This may be true, but in my experience, the difference is largely imperceptible. The quality of blu-ray vs. cable TV is about the same to me.

4k is the new thing. I think the vast majority will derive little benefit from it:

I think the data above are hypothetical, but the point is made:  can you really tell the difference at a normal viewing range?

Yeah I guess you need a really fucking big tv or be sitting very close to it for it to make a difference over 1080p. I think I'm about 10 ft away from my 40" TV. The highest resolution device I have is a 10" tablet with 2650x1600 resolution. I checked out some 1440p demo videos on it on youtube and they looked pretty awesome.

Educational stuff, walking dead, game of thrones, sometimes I'll find movies worth watching.  I read much more than I watch.
