My TV is usually on when I'm home, helps distract and mask my tinnitus. Plus I'm an old fart, that's how we roll. . . .

My brother was like that, then my stepdad came along and got really mad at him for watching TV so much, and threw his 13in TV out the window, seriously out the window, shit blew up when it hit the ground and my brother was in tears, I wanted to murder my stepdad then.
Lots of poor parenting in my life.

TV is still good, but I don't watch live broadcast outside of NBA basketball here and there. It's all about torrents and streaming.

you guys don't know what it was like growing up with the TV I did. I had a pair of vice grips to turn the broken knob and some tin foil on the antennae! The options these days for entertainment in the home are outstanding!

Same here, but replace foil with coat hanger wire. My dad was a wizard with that stuff. Antenna still has a negative stigma but these days most broadcasts are in HD. Under bad conditions it's less watchable than a bad analog signal though (MPEG artifacts and it just cuts out entirely).

Antenna HD is substantially better quality than cable HD. Antenna signal is uncompressed, cable is highly compressed.

My mom had to rent VCR's to watch VHS on a black and white TV, then around 2nd grade we got a 13in color TV which made us feel like we were moving up in life, I understand your TV struggle, the struggle is real.

Same. Commercials are annoying.
But if its a movie preview or tv show preview i unmute it.
Occassonially i see a really good commercial that i must unmute but most commercials are annoying as fuuuuuuuck.

Yeah I've heard similar, cable providers have more of an incentive to lower the bitrates to squeeze more channels through the pipe. I'm pretty sure ATSC is still compressed though (MPEG-2 or H.264). Truly uncompressed HD video requires very high bitrates.

This may be true, but in my experience, the difference is largely imperceptible. The quality of blu-ray vs. cable TV is about the same to me.

4k is the new thing. I think the vast majority will derive little benefit from it:

I think the data above are hypothetical, but the point is made: can you really tell the difference at a normal viewing range?

Yeah I guess you need a really fucking big tv or be sitting very close to it for it to make a difference over 1080p. I think I'm about 10 ft away from my 40" TV. The highest resolution device I have is a 10" tablet with 2650x1600 resolution. I checked out some 1440p demo videos on it on youtube and they looked pretty awesome.

Educational stuff, walking dead, game of thrones, sometimes I'll find movies worth watching. I read much more than I watch.
