jars- tin foil or no?
    #2388447 - 02/29/04 08:24 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

hello everybody, AFOAF used the PF Tek. he innoculated his jars on the 25th and has only checked it once (on the 28th i believe) and there wasnt anything noticable happening yet. they are 1/2 pint jars with verm on top and there is tin foil over the lid which has the four holes in it. is it better to have tin foil over the holes or no tin foil and just leave the holes open? thanks

Keep the foil off. YOur dry verm layer will help prevent contams on your cake. Just give them time and make sure your temp is around 80-86 degrees.

tin foil is a good idea...my freinds use two layers of foil..and then remove the top layer to shoot them up..and replace....

he knows its supposed to be around 86*F but his is only like 72-76*F but he put a heating pad down and a towel over that, then a rubbermaid container with the jars inside it over the heating pad and he has the insides of a pillow in the rubbermaid around the jars to keep the heat in. he knows this will be slower mycellium growth but its the best he can do, so would keeping tin foil on or off speed up growth or anything? thanks for your replys

with or without heating problems, the tin foil isn't going to change your rate of colonization.

the foil shouldnt hamper air exchange..and about 60% colonization flip the jars to let the air seep out.
