Darkening of agar after transfer
    #23884134 - 12/01/16 10:27 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I recently transferred what appeared to be healthy, clean L. Nuda sections to a few new agar plates.

2 days later, I noticed a darkening of the original agar section, ranging from a dark brown to carmel color on most plates. The myc appears to be taking off just fine. It is not a darkening of the myc, definitely the agar wedge itself.

Some are faintly darker, while a couple plates are pronounced.

Has anyone had this experience, and if so, what could it indicate?

Attached are photos of a pronounced case, and less pronounced.

If you let the agar cool more before pouring you will have little to no condensation.

We're there any activities in the original agar?

Thanks for the condensation tip.

All of the original plates I transferred from were showing strong growth and no visible contamination, if that answers your question.

Nah I was asking if you added something like an antibiotic. What agar recipe did you use?

Pretty sure it's normal for L.nuda to have some darkening in the middle. Look up some mycelium shots lol

Malt dextrose agar, no antibiotics. It's been tricky to find myc shots of L. Nuda but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks!

Any ideas why it darkens like that?

No idea. Just its morphology? Shiitake as well browns and hardens before you can even fruit it. Reishi can get some crazy darkening of myc, edibles myc sometimes exhibit some insane morphology

Thanks! Yes, I have noticed distinct differences in morphology between the strains I am growing out now, always very interesting.

I read in GGMM that it is best to section out rhizomorphic areas, not cottony ones when transferring. When the mycelium is cottony all over (due to morphology) what do you look for in selecting the best leading edge?

Thick ropey myc that appears to have colonized the most. Nothing thin, unless we're talking shiitake here lol
