scrotums?
    #2388401 - 02/29/04 09:25 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

i dont know if this is the place for this but here goes.
i read somewhere years ago about p cubensis and i remember it stateing that when you find a mushroom , if you will gently dig around it you will find the mycilium and once you find that you can gently follow its path - dig down about 2 inches and in a diameter of 2 feet you can find the "scrotum".the size ranges from a small pea to 2 inches or more and they resemble a coal cinder.once you find this if you break it open it bleeds blue or purple.also it said that you could dry this out and it could be kept for up to 20 years or more.then all you had to do was pour water on it (or soak it over night),and grow it just like you would a bulb of a plant except for the sterile medium used.now im not a micologist but i would like to know the truth about this. THIS IS ONLY WHAT I REMEMBER AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AS FACT UNTIL IT IS VERIFIED BY SOMEONE HERE. but i havent seen anything on this topic so i had to ask the question.
any info would be appreciated.

woops posted too soon
sclerotia do exist for some species, but i've never heard of cubensis making them. Sclerotium are tissue masses used to store nutrients. They're solid so they wouldn't "bleed" anything. Theoretically you could grow mycilia and ultimatly fruitbodies from sclertium but contaminates on the sclerotia would over run your media. As for being able to be stored for 20 years or more, i doubt they would be viable after 20 years. However sclerotia can keep they're nutritional and alkaloidal value for a very long time

Yeah, you're thinking of sclerotium. Cubensis do not produce sclerotia, but there are a few types of psychedellic mushrooms that do. Check the advanced cult/pictures forum for pictures of them. Sclerotium are also known as philospher's stones.

Lmao-I made  a funny. If I"m not mistaken I read that out of an old "High Times" magazine back in the late 80's early 90's. Like I said, I wasnt to sure about it, but I remember reading  about it-I just wanted to know if there was any truth to it and I guess I'm a little right and a little wrong at the same time. Thanks for the info though. Also they called them "testicles".I know I sound stupid but thats how I remember this -the article showed pictures of this and what the "sclerotium" looks like,But it stated that when broken open that it would drip blue ink and yes they were also known as "Philosphers Stones"and were considered quite potent.
Thanks for the feed back-So there is really no use in diggin up cow poop to find the "scrotums" and "testicles" of our little friends,"Mr. Magic Mushroom"?
Also I am not sure on the species. I thought they were talking about cubes but I guess not.
Anyways at least this was partly true.

Psilocybe Mexicana and Psilocybe Tampanensis both produce the "scrotums" (haha I love that word) you are referring to. However, eating sclerotia that came from under cow shit would be a little gross. Do as you wish, though.
