how do these jars look??
    #23883031 - 11/30/16 09:04 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I put some B+ cultures to grain about a 8 days ago.  The grain is a combo of rye and white sorghum, soaked for 12 hours with gypsum then PC'd for 90 min. They were inoculated in front a flowhood.  Are these going a bit slow?

I put a couple different wedges in this last jar just to see what would happen haha

did you just drop the wedge and put it up to colonize?

i shake mine up so the wedge is in the middle of the grains.

I was messing around with combo's and one poster wrote how he liked combining them because rye would soak up any excess water from the sorghum.  I'm sticking with just rye from now on.  I wasn't sure if it was a big deal to just put it on the top of the grains, should I do that method where you tilt the jar so the grains are at a slant then once you put the wedge in you tilt it back to cover the wedge?

You can shake the hell out of your jar without hurting anything. You may even beat some mycelium off the wedge in the process and create a few more inoculation points. I'd recommend looking into liquid inoculant. It's easy and it cuts down on colonization times

I'd only get into lc if I had a culture with i knew produced consistent results no reason to add another possible vector for contams.  When should I shake these jars?

LI is different than LC. With LC you're making the mycelium colonize a nutritious solution. With LI you're simply breaking your agar into some sterile water to pour into your grain jars. It's less effort and less risky to do than dropping a wedge from the same plate into each jar. Had you used LI your jars could have been done colonizing by now. Just something to keep in mind for the future.

As for the jars I'd shake them really well now then leave them be until they're finished. The standard is to shake at 30% but it looks like you've got only one inoculation point and it's at a crawl as a result. Gotta distribute that mycelium more evenly.
