Hey ThUmB pRiNt, great thought to conserve energy for the other leaves; you think those two "sad" leaves are goners then?

I just did a full water and nute swap BUT while doing so I just broke the bottom "curled" leaf of off plant #2 "Crunch"...;(  I was going to do that tomorrow and try to micropropagate it via tissue culture. Not sure if I can make the petiole stay viable until tomorrow...  Anyone on here into tissue culture? or has anyone cloned from a leaf only? (far fetched for this plant, I know, but I love to hear about successes and fails)

Taking unhealthy leaves off the plant to conserve energy and nutes was not an original idea I came up with on my own. This is something that was explained to me while I was taking a 300 hour horticulture class and when this guy explained this all to me it made perfect sense so Ive done it ever since and it seems to help ill plants.

Yes, personally, in my eyes I consider those bad leaves dead, and yes when the leaves are as bad those are its like even though the plant is expending all that extra energy to try to save those leaves at the same time it wants to drop them asap because when ever I have unhealthy leaves like the ones you knocked off, any little tiny bit of pressure you apply on them they just fall right off.

When I have leaves like those and I go to pick them off I dont really even pick them off, right when I touch them they fall right off before I even have a chance to pull on them.

But remember to never pick all the leaves off of the plant in one shot, even if they are all unhealthy.

Because even though a well rooted plant may sometimes survive if you pick all of the leaves off of it or even though it might survive if it drops all its leaves, this is still very risky.

A plant needs at least some leaves on it for photosynthesis, the amount of leaves a plant needs for this depends on the size of the plant and the size of the root ball.

Ive never propagated plants via tissue culture myself but I know it is possible.

I dont know any of the details of how to do this but maybe its pretty similar to dealing with fungi cultures.

I would love to see how this goes for you, please keep us posted if you decide to go though with this.

Good Luck!

Hey Thumb Print, thanks for the detail. I recall doing this awhile ago with a different plant, but had forgotten about it. It does seem a little cruel to pick off leaves, lol, but a necessary evil, like disciplining kids. I get nervous picking off half of the leaves off such a small plant! I think these problems might be due to a high ph; hydro is so ph finicky.
Have you ever done anything hydro before? How are your plants doing?

What do you guys (and maybe even gals) think is causing these leafs to look like this then fall off? Changing of the season? Salt build up/nutrient lock out? Nutrient deficiency? Too many cuttings taken awhIle back? (BTW All the clones are looking gooooooood)
It has not gotten any better after a couple good flushes. But it keeps putting out new growth that looks fine other than a cold spell that caused minor drying on the edges.  It's over due for a repotting, going to repot it this week into a 30 gallon pot with fox farm happy frog soil.  Expensive stuff buy everyone of my kratoms absolutely love it and explode with growth.

No problem Brother, thats what this community is all about, sharing our knowledge and learning from others.

Ive never grown the Hydro route, I want to get lots of experience with soil then soil less mixes before I jump into Hydro.

This was suggested to me by a few different people because like you said Hydroponics grows are so much more sensitive and unforgiving.

So eventually I will try Hydro but I dont have the space to do it now and I didnt have the experience I have now back when I  had the space.

By the way picking 50% of a plants leaves it completely acceptable but thats where I personally would draw the line in one session. I wouldnt pick more than half the leaves in fear of stressing out the plant. In some cases you can pick more and it wont always be too bad.

If the plant has a well established root system it can sometimes survive even if you pick off all the leaves.

Ive actually been able to nurse my little baby plant almost all the way back to good health, they were in bad shape when I got them. Even my Rifat that I had just about given up on.

Said Rifat just started to sprout some new leaves that finally look good but only the tips were popping out the bud and I picked all of the other very unhealthy leaves off of it (more than half the leaves) and the plant looks good, better than before. Keep in mind though, this plant is very little and the root ball probably isnt all that big either. It stalled out real hard for a while.

All plants are different and there are so many other variables that need to be factored in when making decisions like how many leaves to pick off in one go and many other decisions too.

Also Ill say it again, Im not an expert, this is just my experience and if anyone catches anything I say that is not correct or a better way of doing things please let me know.

Do they both have both have those spots on them?

I had spots on my Rifat but they didnt look like those and when I was doing research to be able to diagnose the problem Im pretty sure I saw some pic that looked like there and it was either a fungal leaf spot infection or a bacterial leaf spot infection.

Of course it can. I got my rifat from a californian that has a huge tree.

Hey everybody! I created an account here just because of this thread. I live in the Atlanta area and I've been growing kratom for three years, and have made hundreds of clones the last two years. I'm glad to be in the company of other kratom enthusiasts! Most of my plants are in an unused bedroom with a lot of windows in my basement. They look horrible right now, but that is to be expected. I expect I'll have a bug infestation before too long, it happens every winter. They will bounce back when the weather gets warm, so no worries. I've got a few Bumble Bees in the ground, we will see if they sprout new growth next summer. Winters in The US are hard on kratom. Anyway, it's great to be here. I hope I can bring something to this part of the forum.

Plazmotech, with enough research and work, almost any grow environment can be simulated! If you're committed, you can do it; would love to see if you tackle it!

Dope! But according to what I've read, and comparing it to average forecasts for my city, it's far too dry here. And during the winter it's a bit too cold. Humidity is regularly below 60%, temps during winter reach as low as 8ÂșC at night.  What do you think?

Your good Brother they will adapt and worst case scenario you can have them as house plants permanently or just bring them in the house during winter.

I've decided I'll name my [soon to be] plant Donny. I live in California, so he's way out of his element.

Plazmotech, those temps aren't ideal, as you said.  As ferrel_human suggested, they might adapt; however, I was referring to recreating an environment for an indoor grow (but that's space consuming). Obviously, the trees would have to be kept on the smaller size, but instead of one big tree, you could do a few 5-6' house plant/trees and thus multiple strains. I wish I lived in a place with a lot more sun and higher temps, but I don't. I've heard of one person in Idaho, growing large trees in a barn (did not hear that first hand, fyi, but I believe it). It must be insulated though, since ID winters get below freezing, and it's extremely dry, so they must have a humidifier of some sort, like an Orchid house... a few pond foggers in buckets of ph balanced water in a green house and you've got great humidity...
