Is it worth it to go to court for a speeding ticket?

I'm guilty of it, doing 40 in a 30mph. I've just always heard that if you go and the ticketing officer doesn't show you don't have to pay? Probably a crock of shit but just wondering if any of you guys have went to court for a speeding ticket.

I would go waste their time just because. They'll usually knock off some money or points if they're nice. So I've been told.

I don't know about where you're at, but here if you go and speak to the assistant DA before court, 9 times out of 10 they will reduce the charges to improper equipment. Which doesn't go against your insurance. You still pay the fine in court, but it saves momey in the long run cause insurance doesn't go up.

If the officer doesn't show up you will be let off, but most of the time they do show. You can go through with the effort to go to court, but if it turns out the officer does show, you should change it and repeal the case. They usually come prepared and bring forth evidence like dashcam videos, or the speed that they clocked you at on their speedometers, etc.
So you would have to have pretty compelling evidence to win in court, such as a GPS device on your car that proves that you were not in fact going at the clocked speed, in the case that they do show up.

It wouldn't be worth my time unless it was a really expensive ticket.
If you end up going to court, demand the police officer produce a certificate of calibration for the radar gun that covers the day you received the ticket.

Just pay your fine and follow the law when you drive.
It's not like drug laws where there is an injustice argument regarding personal liberty.
30mph is probably a residential zone, where kids could be playing.
Stop speeding.

There's no way in hell I'd just pay the fine without going to court. All my speeding tickets have always been reduced to either improper equipment, or the next lowest tier ( example: 40 in a 30 dropped to 35 in a 30.) either way, it'll keep insurance from rising so much. All those were without an attorney. Just get there a little early, 20 minutes or so, and see the DA or his/her asst. In most cases you don't even have to ask for a reduction, just tell them you wanted to see what you could do.
I've had quite a few speeding tickets. I'm speaking from experience here. If you don't mind paying the extra insurance premiums for the next 3 yrs, then by all means, pay it off early and forget about court. Me personally, I've got better things to do with my money than pay increased insurance costs.
I know everyone makes different choices for different reasons, but that's what I would do. It's never let me down before.

Absolutely. Not going to court would be very stupid and would land you ultimately in more debt and trouble

So I just go there and ask them what they can do for me? Do I have to go in front of a judge? What do I tell him? I read in my state that if I am found guilty at court than I am also responsible for all the fees associated with court on top of the ticket.

In most cases, you can pay it off early and not have to go to court without having to worry about an FTA. However, that's not the best idea with a speeding ticket, because you can usually get charges reduced.

Yes just ask what you can do. Here, you don't necessarily have to go in front of a judge. On your first appearance, you go into a court room with several assistant DA'S ( it may be different where you're at, that's why I said show up a little early) and you have several options: 1. Have your case heard same day ( where you'll go to another room with the judge), 2. Ask for a continuance and get a later court date, or 3. Ask what you can do and see if they reduce charges, 9 times out of 10 they do. Then if you're happy with the reduced charges, you can just pay your fines and go on home or work or whatever.
I live in North Carolina, so the system may be a little different wherever you are. But either way, I would definitely see the DA or asst before seeing the judge. The only way you won't have to pay fines and fees is if you get the charge totally dismissed, which is highly unlikely without paying a lawyer.

Yea, here there is a $160 court cost on top of the fine. Well that was last time I went anyway, about 2 years ago.

Absolutely. At the initial hearing, they will have a whole herd of people show show up. A few DAs will be there and speak to everyone one by one and strike deals with everyone. Unless your time is more valuable than the money, it's stupid not to show up.

Definitely go. I would be willing to bet that at only 10 mph over, it'll be reduced to improper equipment, which is no points against your license or insurance. Be prepared to pay the fines and court costs when you go. Just make sure you see the DA before going in front of the judge. You probably won't have to see the judge at all.
Let us know how it plays out and good luck.

I've gone to court on all my more recent speeding tickets. I've had fines reduced, tickets dropping to moving violations to avoid points, and the speed reduced etc.

My radar detector saved me a few times. But it sucks when cops turn their radar off, then they are fucking ninjas and shit.
